More power in the Cummins?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 95 Ford F800 with the Cummins engine. It has an Allision AT545 tranny (4 speed), and the rating on the engine is 210HP and 486 ft-Ib. When I am on the freeway, the rpm is in the 2500's and won't go any faster than 65 mph.

I know this is a big truck (GVW 22,000) and that could be a reason why it is slow, but I was wondering if I could get some more power out of this engine without pulling too much money out of my pocket. Any suggestions?

You are tached out

There's enough power in the engine to pull the truck faster, but you are up against the governor. You can set the governor to 3000, and you will gain some speed. You could re-gear it. That will be somewhat expensive. Remember, pushing the engine up to 3000 RPM constant will pump a lot of fuel, too. Many of the trucks in this category are this way. In order to get good loaded startability, they are geared deep. That costs on top end speed, but OEM's believe it's worth the tradeoff.
Don't forget that whatever load you get up to speed, you need brakes to slow as well. If you running grossed out, maybe you don't want to go mach Cummins!

This may be a better forum for you to get answers on increasing the power out of your engine.
