Hey guys, Wallyworld has the quart bottles of Lucas Oil Stabilizer on sale for $3.97ea. I've never used the stuff before...mainly because it's usually $7 to $8.
Does anybody have any comments about it?
I picked up two quarts....gonna use some in the 4wheelers, generator, and riding mower before putting it in vehicles.

I have no evidence that the Delo 400 I use needs to be "stabilized".

I don't care for the stuff, personally. It's basically 95+% viscosity improver. Also don't like the instruction to replace 20% of the oil. (use to be 20%...still?)
That's a lot of acid fighting, particle dispersing, heat reducing, soot suspending, wear preventing additives to remove to make room for something that oil mfg's already use and don't think more is neccessary.

The Upper Cylinder lube is good, though. But it's the ONLY lucas product I recommend.

I use it. It saved my jeep motor when the oil pump went out 100 miles from home. motor has 300K on it and all beaings look as good as new. been using it for the last 100K. Ive only had my truck for a year and have used it every oil change sense Ive got it.

 

Lucas oil stabilizer is junk. Causes air bubbles in the oil which would lead to a lack of lubrication. Motor oils are engineered and made according to spec. Adding anything to them will more than likely do more harm than good. I would NEVER use any oil stabilizer in any car. Tranny and differentials are a different story.

 

Do not use the oil stabilizer-- period.

Other lucas products are imo good-- some of them very good (like the Upper Cyl lubricant and the Auto Tranny additive).

But the stabilizer is a more sophisticated STP kind of product, but the air bubbling that it allows can really increase oil temps and the rate of lube breakdown-- not to mention total lubrication failure.

I won't try to convert those who believe in it, but if you have no preconceived bias, try to answer why a mega-dollar corporation like Shell or Chevron wouldn't use the stuff as the formulate oils to meet ever-tougher oil specs.

If you use a quality oil, you shouldn't need a "Stabilizer".

Lucas Fuel treatment is a horse of a different color. .....It's GOOD stuff.

 

I had a customer once that had a massive grinding noise in his front axle (Ford... 4x4... 250,000 miles). As one step before rebuild, he added 90% similar type (friction modifier) product. Quieted it down considerably and he got another 10,000 miles out of it.
That's impressive but does not necessarily translate to being a beneficial additive for longterm engine protection.

I sometimes think the Cummins is so strong it would run beautifully on hair tonic instead of engine oil.......
at least for the first 100,000 miles.

Well not exactly the responses I expected but that's what I needed. Thanks guys. I think I'll probably just return it now. I don't really have a need for it...hey it's job security for the WallyWorld stockers right?

 

Ive been using for years now in all of my vehicles, seem to have no problems yet. I like the extra viscosity where I live, with summer highs at up to 122*

 

Don't fell bad Moose. Alot of those products play on your pride in your ride. They know you want the best for your truck, just sometimes, the best you can do is just keep it clean and add the oils of quality. Additives to existing oils are not benefical in most if not all the testing I have read/seen.

The Lucas stuff really got me worried after I saw the gearbox demo a guy built with plexiglass. He ran some straight cut gears (just like the ones at the store demo) with the lucas product, but up to running speeds like 2000 Rpm. It made the oil look like beer foam!!!.. There are additives in gear oils to PREVENT FOAMING, so what good is that?

Oh, and sawdust also quiets down a noisy diff...
