Looking for advice

Hi my name is Adam and I've got a question about some info for one of my Dodges buddy's. He has an 02 Dodge ext cab long bed auto stock except straight pipe. He's going to put gauges on soon and he tows wood trailer and such. He wants me to find out what combo he should go with after a while for turbo and injectors and such. I told him to build the tranny and he knows, he says the turbo and injectors will be a little ways away right now. He just wants to install a drag comp box after the gauges. What he's wanting to know is would turbo and decent injectors wolud match up good for daily driving and moderate towing/hauling along with the drag comp box? He's not going for real big power but wants to get up and go along with a touch of smoke also Thank's, Adam

Nobody has any info for me on a good combo for what he's going to wanna do? After we build the tranny he wants a good matching set of injectors(not to wild) and good turbo. He tows a wood trailer and such and hauls water all the time. He wants to have fun with it. He's going to get a drag comp box soon also if that'll help. Thank's

I tow 15k# through mountains of W.V., Pa. & have had multiple combos on my truck trying to find the ultimate towing combo. If your friend is wanting to have a great tow rig with awesome trailer pulling power, but doesn't want problems with the truck, he needs to build the foundation before framing the house. The vp44 injection pump WILL die if he doesn't upgrade the fuel system before adding a comp box...trust me.
1.] I would start by getting a fuel pressure, egt, boost gauge.
2.] Then get a Fass fuel system to supply the vp44 with plenty of fuel.
3.] The tranny will die if it isn't upgraded [ the comp will just over power it.]

He would be better off getting a Edge Juice with Attitude monitor as it will have all the necessary gauges with the added bonus of protection for his automatic tranny which detects tranny slip & adjusts power level accordingly.

He can't add much more power than he already has or his stock auto tranny will be a quivering puddle of molten parts.

I'd go with an injector in the 100hp range, but with the box cranked up that will kill the tranny-period. This size injector will allow you to tow with the box on level 1 and have a good amount of fuel with it cranked up.

His tranny is on borrowed time already, never mind after adding injectors.

As for a turbo, that's hard to say. For a "diesel shop" turbo, I'd say the HTT SS62 is probably about is good a streetable turbo as it gets, based on the reports of people who have it. Unfortunately, they say it also doesn't cool the EGTs as well as some would hope. But that was on a 12V, so comparing it to a 24V might not be relevant.

There's also the Garretts, which don't seem to be very common, and I can't figure why. They are reasonably priced and seem to perform very well.

Thank's J Lent. He already has a FASS 150 and I told him to get some gauges soon before other things. Another friend and I have upgraded 47re's before and that's what we'll do to this one too. My other Dodge friend and I pulled my neighbor's old 47re and upgraded it with a Suncoast level 3 years ago when he had it. It seemed to hold up good with the setup he had. He had a drag comp with "Smoker" injectors in it. My friend I'm researching for wants to put on turbo and injectors sometime but doesn't want it to smoke all the time just mostly when he wants it too. Would a Phat Shaft 62 with some Mach injectors be a good match eventually? Thank's, Adam

I would wait a little while for the Adreneline box from Quadzilla. It is being tested now & should be released soon....it will have more muscle than a Drag comp & the bottom end for towing. I have tried Quad's XZT+ for towing & it dominates all other boxes & tuners in low end grunt, but the thing that was most impressive is the egts were lower than any other tuner I've run. I think your friend would love this combo & I'm sure most will agree. I'd get a set of100hp injectors, A HTB2 62/12 & Adreneline.

The nice thing about the forthcoming Quad box is that if it's still a little "rough around the edges", you can download enhanced softwares as they become available.

Quad has a good record of continuous software updates, and that's important when buying a product that has that feature.

With an upgraded tranny and some friends who can weld I think he should consider twins that reuse the stock turbo with a modified exhaust housing instead of a bigger single. He will need a wide power band and good control for towing (I assume that he's fetching the wood from the forest- logging roads etc)
With most upgraded trannies comes a TC that has a lower stall point effectively lugging the engine if you install a big single. This isn't too bad for drag racing because you spool with power braking on the line- but that's not practical for a daily driver. I think that a set of twins with an HY, external wastegate and an HT3B or even better a wastegated turbo with a smallish housing would spool quick and still supply the air for 400 hp and be very streetable with a trailer.

The reports about the Quad box are promising, I am running a Smarty and since the new software I do really like it. (extremely wide powerband, quick throttle response etc)
I think that when you have a certain hp goal in mind you can either go for a wire tap box and "small" injectors or a non-tap box or programmer and bigger injectors to achieve the same result.
The main advantage of a box is IMO that you can adjust power on the fly. Another bonus is the defueling based on EGT, tranny temp etc. (I like that idea on the quad and edge juice- the smarty can't do that)

My personal experience leads me to suggest Mach injectors. (But this experience is rather limited so take it with a grain of salt- but I know that the Machs always exceeded my expectations for a hi power, low egt , low smoke injector.)

Just my 2c

Thank's guys. I'll look into the Quad Adrenaline box and would really like more info about different Mach injectors if someone can help me. He wants to mainly smoke when he really wants to, Not all the time. Hopefully he's not set on that Comp box cause I've read good things on Quads boxes also. Adam

Hey guys. Would this combo be good for my friends truck that I'm asking about. A Comp box with Mach 4 injectors and a HTB2 62/12 turbo. He has a 4" exhaust right now, FASS 150 and air intake. It's an 02 auto. I know the tranny will have to be done and so does he. We'll do it when it comes time. He wants around 400 or more hp. He hauls wood and water and tows different things plus plays around. Thank's

Sounds good to me. I'm sure it'll get toasty when he's giving her hell- that combo is good for 500 with a bigger turbo. The backdown features of the edge or quad boxes might help in that department, or he could just get some mach 1.6-2 and still have enough power to break 400 hp.
