Let's talk exhaust

98 12v CTD.

Here is what is on it now:










I would have to assume that "Flo Pro" is not a stock muffler, but the cat looks stock as far as I can tell.


Summitt & Jeg's both have a 4" turbo-back kit for around $299, does that sound about right? Will I see performance gains from a kit like that?

ATC250R has a full length Summit system on his truck, you could send him a PM to see how he likes his. Losing the cat will get you faster spool-up on the turbo, and your EGT's will go down at full power. You probably won't feel much SOTP performance gains, but the lower EGT will allow you to add more fuel.

I took the muffler and cat off together. Disconnect at precat and post muffler. Installed 3" flex tubing, used old hanger with an old truck clamp I found in the shop. Just make sure the tail pipe is solidly mounted and flex is clamped so it wont bounce around. Cheap fix, which is what I needed at the time. Didnt cost a dime. About ten months and counting.

Hey DRM, the only thing that doesent look stock is the muffler. The tailpipe(tip) on your truck looks the exact same as my dads 98 12 valve, and the rest of it besides the muffler looks stock. Straight Pipe it!!

I called one local shop, they didn't have anything that big in stock to do it. All I have in the shop is some 3.5" and 3", but galvanized (I like my brain cells, thanks )

You guys had good luck getting a local shop to chop the cat & muffler out and go straight pipe? If it is considerably cheaper than the $299 I might just do it.

My cousin cut out the cat, and muffler, and drove the truck(1998 24valve) to the muffler shop, and they did a really good job for $30-$40.They bent the pipe right, and made hangers for it.

Ok, I'm confused. I have a '96 California model and it appears to have a fully factory exhaust system. It is 4" and appears to have a resonator (sp?), but not a cat. It is very quiet and I've been shopping around to go aftermarket, but what have I got? Is it a cat and just looks different or is it a resonator?

Most folks confuse the resonator for a Catalytic Converter.

My 96 had a CAT & comes stock with a muffler, no resonator.

The Flo-Pro doesn't look like a straight thru muffler. No doubt it's more restrictive than a straight thru.

The Walker 21471 is a straight thru. Also, the exhaust flow isn't impeded by louvers. Sounds great too.

If it is a cat and not a resonator, a muffler shop probably will not remove it. They can get fined big $$ if they get caught removing emissions devices.

Like he said, straight pipe it!!!! Did mine in the driveway. I measured just in front of the cat to just behind the muffler ( I measured 62"). Had a muffler guy sell me a 3" diameter flared on both ends, cost $25. No bends are needed. A little noisy, but have grown to love it.
