Just buy replacement AFE?

I was tooling around and had an idea....why not just buy the replacement filter element for the AFE, as seen here, and use it like a BHAF? It would be WAY cheaper than buying the AFE kit that the filter comes with, and the mount is just a piece of pipe anyways. If I need a heat guard I will just build one that would probably work better than the AFE. You could also get the AFE torque tube to go to the turbo, as seen here. Any input? Ideas? Is it a bad idea?

Why not, indeed!

I think you are on the right track, as I never could figure out why an AFE setup costs so much. The filter is what, $95? So they charge you another $100 for some heat shielding and a pipe? Seems a little steep to me, too!

Now, Scotty's system I can see the cost on-- it's a molded polymer case and MUCH more costly to make than same flat steel and short piece of pipe.

That's mo, anyway.

Its a good idea, thats exactly what I did except I went with a large cylinder type K&N and built my own heat shield/box.

Any other opinions? Who has the stage two intake? Is it worth it? Could it be used with twins (which are in my future at some point)? Thanks!

Well I did it. It works well. I just used 4 inch acrylic tubing that I had laying around to clamp to both the filter and the tubing from the turbo. I have not really noticed a reduction in EGT's though. It does sound much better. A heat shield box with a hole in the cowling like the SAII is coming in a few weeks. I am going to make it out of bent sheet metal (I lied, but I am going to help ). Smarty is on the way. Injectors and a clutch is next. I am looking forward to it!

Clean the prefilter weekly and replace the filter itself (stage 1) yearly.

Weekly? Like just rinse it off? I drive in dust every day, but I didn't think it would be that often.

HOHN,

Uh no not really, the price of steel for one thing makes the powder coated AFE housings much more expensive than a blow/vacuum molded polymer product. Plus what lost of folks don't realize is AFE uses a heavier gauge WELDED steel housing vs what the lighter thickness steel other manufacturers use and then they have the truck owner screw the various parts together. Then you have the velocity stack AFE filters vs a typical conical that has a flow abruption at the tube attachemnt. etc etc lots of engineering goes into AFE that others don or won't do because of costs and the typical owner usually doesn't know what the flow differences actually are unless they do some serious research at a place like this.

On a blow/vacuum molded product the first one is fairly expensive as you have the mold costs, after that the next one is very very low in cost. In fact in the case of most blow molded products the major cost is in the trim out procedure, especially if you are not using a multi axis CNC router to do it quickly and the same exact way every time.
