Anyone ever have a gauge for looking at the intake air temperature? It seems that it would be a good thing to have to know how your intake system is working. Or is EGT so directly related that it's not an issue?

 

It would be interesting to see what it is, but wouldn't tell you much. Because we don't have any control over the inlet air temp other than upping the intercooler size or doing a spritze with water or water/methanol, it would just be a novelty.

 

Novelty? maybe, but yes I do monitor the intake air temps. You think you don't have any control over them but in fact you do. Also it has validated several add-ons that I have made, one the switch from stock air box to AFE. Temps went down with this addition, so they were positive changes. For the most part the intake air temps stay around 20-30 degrees higher then ambient temp. But they go up fast as the boost increases, you can tell best on a long hard pull, with boost pressure over 20psi. Looking forward to installing my water/methanol injection kit and seeing the results. I use the Autometer ultra lite series Intake air charge gauge

 

I've got an Autometer 2 channel with memory recall, I check it on every hard pass I make and at the dyno, I can then look at EGT's at a glance, Boost with a tale-tell and Recall for air temps, I have one channel in the hat and have the other in the air stream inside the filter.

I've got a similar set up -- one sensor in the intake "hat", one in the turbo hose just past the filter, and one outside the filter. All hooked into a small LCD panel screen with three readings. In a lot of cases, I can "see" what's coming by reading the temps, and get an idea of EGT increases before they happen. That allows me to compensate better, especially when towing.

Sounds like something I would like. Can you give me more details? Where did you get the stuff to do this?

And they should. For most of us that won't use injection of a liquid, a good boost gage will fit the bill. Air temp is going to go up with air pressure. For the mechanical weenie in me, I do like the thought of measuring anything and everything that can be.

I fabbed the "system" from meteorological equipment & electronics at the outfit where I work -- went to Lowe's for some of the parts. I don't know of any automotive market kits for this, but I believe you can order components and pieces from Heath or Radio Shack, or even an online meteorological outlet like Weather Central.
