I think the EGT's got a little toasty....

A guy I work with emailed me this auction.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-...em320191591118

Asked me to look at the pics and give him my opinion. It's a 24 valve so I really couldn't help him much with what to look for and ask about. But that pic kind of alarmed me. It's a nice looking truck and all. Must have been driven pretty hard to hit that number though. All while max boost was 38 psi...

All in all, based on those pics, anyone think there is any reason to shy away from the truck? My coworker is deadset on a CTD, but I'm not sure what to tell him as far as this one goes. I bought both of mine over the internet, but can't say I'd pick this one up.

Looks like someone was racing another truck up a grade and didn't have the courage to back out of the throttle. I'm sure there are a lot of trucks out there like this. Stupid people that just think they have a fast truck, they don't realize the little engine wasn't designed to make that kind of HP continuously and don't understand the fuel it takes to get there.

1850 for short bursts wont kill anything. I seen guys hit 2000 by the end of the 1/4 mile. That said, I wouldnt buy it. who knows how many times thats been reset, or if 1850 was sustained for a while. no way to tell without checking the cyl walls for scuffing.

i hold mine at 1800* during sled pulls AND daily driving. i see 1700-1800 several times a month driving the hills with my work trailer in the summer. 2-4 mile long hills, no problems so far

I looked at this truck when it was on ebay. Its a sharp lookin truck but I don't think I would buy it either. Like people have already said there is no easy way to tell how many times it has seen those temps.

Short blast to 1700-1800 might not cause immediate carnage, but the damage is cumulative-- like loud noises damaging your hearing. Just because you don't go completely deaf from that rock concert doesn't mean that there's no damage done.

Most of the electric guitarists I talk to are almost deaf if they've been gigging awhile.

EGT wise, I've never seen anything that high, even remotely. I have to let off the pedal before my truck hits 1400 because I'm breaking the speed limit.

I suspect that load makes all the difference, as I'm sure with a heavy load or a sled behind me, I could really hurt my truck with EGT with my injectors.

Wow and I was worried about my egt's!! Not so worried anymore after talking with the guy's who run similer turbo's every day! No worries for me Hohn this turbo's great! Little by little I'll get the twins done! It's just going to take a while with my truck budget! Thats why I am going to wait to do my primary hot pipe until last. By the time I get done who knows what kind of New tech. will be out! Lol!!

Keep in mind that number is the temp of the air passing the probe, not necessarily anything metal inside the engine. Which is why it cools off so fast when you let off. Pistons are cooled by oil, head and block by water. Are super high temps a good idea for extended periods of time? No! But just because the gauge reads that doesn't mean much, especially since you don't know how long it was that high. I've seen an engine torn apart out of a pulling truck that saw several (10 or so) 300ft passes at over 2200deg (no water injection and the gauge only went that high) it had absolutely 0 signs of damage. No scuff marks, no ring damage, no valve damage or piston damage. Like I said it doesn't make it a good idea but it's not as big of a deal (in short bursts) like some tend to believe.

"my gauge said 1500*, did I do damage?" no, but if it makes you feel better go ahead and tear it down. I'm sure there are some shops that would love the money.

I Drive My Truck Everday And Its Nothing To See 1500 To 1600 Degrees. When Pulling A Sled, I Average In That 1800 Degree Range Also. I Think It Isa Little Hot Also, But The Guy Who Helped Me Build My Motor Said In Short Burst, Dont Worry About It. I Also Once Hauled A John Deere 55 Combine With A Three Row Corn Head About 250 Miles (approx. 20,000 With Gooseneck) In 4th Gear At 60 Mph Running 15 Lbs Boost And 1200 Degrees. So Far No Issues At 10,000 Miles Total On Motor.
