How to turn up a 12 V

Ok guys I bought a 96 12 V for a winter beater! Ok here goes I am going to order a stage 3 plate from wildcatediesel and gauges and a scotty 2. But how do you turn up the pump I hear guys talking about some star wheel? Im looking for free stuff to do to this truck rather then buying a ton of upgrades for a winter truck. I was also wondering since there is no fuelig box if I put my HX40 on the truck will it get an over boost code?

Not sure about a stage 3 plate I use TST
As for the code ,no there is no computer to throw a code ;D
Set the pump timing if it hasn't been done ! FIRST
SORRY Of Course Gauges Before That
Unless that plate is equal to a # 4 or better TST you prob won't need the HX40 but they are nice just a little lag.
Star Wheel ;look at top of AFC housing top ,rear of pump, under allen head plug looks like brake adjuster .
turn to adjust low end smoke . play with back and forth you'll see quick
ENJOY and have fun !

: Eddie : 8)

If you are looking for free mods you can save $ on that new plate and slide the original one all the way forward. Since it's a beater. Look at TST's install instructions online it's pretty good with pictures and descriptions.

Re:How to turn up a 12 V

yep, or take your plate out for more smoke and power (i have a #0 which equals no plate---just ground away at the stock one until it was flat). you wont need the HX-40 until you get to like 370s and a governor spring kit. my egts rarely hit 1180* (on a 95*+ day). once i get a gsk though, then i should be hitting around 1400*. biggest concern: what transmission?

btw, 4" grinder from Bob's Discount-$7 ;D

Re:How to turn up a 12 V

the AFC housing is the air-fuel control housing. it's on the top of the injection pump towards the rear of the truck. there's four screws-1 is a breakaway screw, 1 is flathead screwdrive, and the other 2 are 8mm. i replaced the top two screws with regular philips head ones. takes the screws out, pry back on the starting solenoid, and take the housing off. once that housing comes off, you will see the fuel plate. adjust accordingly.

for the star wheel, look on top of the AFC housing. you will see an inch-diameter circle with an 8mm allen head in it. unscrew it out (probably in real tight). there's the star wheel. towards the front of the truck=more low end fuel/smoke. towards the rear of the truck=less low end fuel/less smoke.

Re:How to turn up a 12 V

There is a diff between a #0 plate and no plate. That's why mine is in the glove box. I ground mine down past a #0 plate and still find more power taking it out. The AFC is now the torque plate. And it's free to take it out instead of buying a new plate.

did you slide it all the way forward. maybe there's a power difference, but i don't feel it. it did the #0 thing because of the controversial pin problem to which i don't know of it can break or not. the injection pump whines down low though and i smoke at WOT down the turnpike locked up (my AFC is also gutted).

Re:How to turn up a 12 V

all the way fwd is the only way (if you have a plate). unless you have bigger injectors & need to cut back smoke...but who wants to do that.

Re:How to turn up a 12 V

Jamie,

Congrats on your purchase of a '96, even if it is for a "winter beater", I think you'll have some fun with it.

I assume you will probably install gauges to keep an eye on things. You may already know that the mechanical lift pump rarely gives any trouble, runs higher pressures than the later electric, and the P7100 injection pump is engine oil lubricated so some of the late model worries are not there (probably don't need a fuel pressure gauge).

I think the fuel plate suggestions so far are a little extreme. For sure if you will be pulling anything heavy. I have a #6 plate installed about .040" "hot", and that's about the most I can get away with (known to haul 20,000+ lb. loads now and then). Even with moderate to cool ambient temps, when hauling a big load, by the time I stand on it to attain highway speed, it's time to back off as the egts are getting up there.

I did just install a compressor upgrade housing and pinwheel on my turbo with very favorable results- more boost quicker, better throttle response, and higher peak boost (adjusted my controller down to 35psi). It was the hsg and wheel for a HX40, it has a 3/16" larger inlet, but fits right on.

I have a 3k GSK just waiting, maybe in the next couple of days.

I imagine you will loose the stock cat and muffler for a straight pipe or perf muffler. Right now I have a 3" pipe and a FlowMaster. It sounds pretty good, but I'm going to fab a 4" system with a FM Delta Force Race muffler. This is for whatever subtle power/quicker spool up/mileage increases/egt decreases I might get.

BTW, your white truck is awesome. ;D

Vin

Re:How to turn up a 12 V

Jamie,

I forgot to mention that the standard trans model has 215hp injectors from the factory where my auto has 180s.
I think there may also be some differences in your pump, such as maybe bigger delivery valves. If you go to the DIS TST info page (http://www.dieselpage.com/tstpk.htm), you will see the selection chart, note the "smaller" recommended plates for the manual trans.

Of course, this is another relatively easy place to get more power- BIGGER INJECTORS ;D
Rod @ Wildcat Diesel can make you a good deal on a set of 230hp injectors, brand spankin' new for $275.00.

I have chosen to try to take a ballanced approach to making more power- do some with a plate, some with injectors (I have a set of 215s on the way), and also improve air and exhaust. This way everything is a little more efficient and under control.

Hope that helps,
have fun!
Vin
