how much hp can a nv4500 take
Re:how much hp can a nv4500 take
The Big Shaft? Apperantly Alot. Isn't that What Schieds and Mitchell runs? If so, then it's 1G of HP.
The 5-speeds and 6-speed small shafts, will wipe right off at ~600HP on the street.
I talked to a tranny rebuilder who deals alot in high performance stuff, and they said they've never seen a 6-speed shaft break in their realm.

:P LOL!!!!
Oh yeah 100HP per 10 feet of exhaust smoke...Now I get it!

I hope that is not the case, or I have spent a lot of money for nothing! My smoke doesn't even reach 10 feet! Of course, it could be the "leafblower downturned exhaust tip affecting it a bit!
Now, back on topic...Jason Burton of NW Custom has consistently dynoed in the 700-750 range, and only problems I know of is the fifth gear nut...twice.

Re:how much hp can a nv4500 take
Well, I took a NV4500 out of a truck the other day that had less than a 1000 miles of use on it. It has the upgraded splined mainshasft and larger input shaft. The tranny was in a 12v truck that dinoed at ~400 hp recently. The tranny shop that sold it said that when they got into it, the backing plat on fifth (center of splined gear where it goes on the shaft) was totally stripped out, and that third gear was missing mor than half of its teeth. Apparently it did not like the amount of torque that was fed to it. The tranny shop has agreed to replace everything at their cost under warranty. I was pretty impressed with this, but I suspect that the new owner of the truck has a little problem with driving a standard shift tranny and was lugging it hard and accelerating through the gears with his foot on the floor, causing the power to come on strong and fast. I am surprised that nothing else in the driveline was broken.

12V?
Dyno'd 400HP? Could that be 404HP?
You are in Dallas.
Sounds like you are talking about that truck Mark Just sold.
I am not suprised the truck did what it did. It was ran HARD.
The nights I did spend at his shop,,, 2-3 burnouts a night starting with a 3rd gear dual disc clutch dump was the norm.
Mark makes me look like a little 'ole blue hair.
I guess the torqueyness off 400HP with a 12V will start erasing gear teeth.
