How does a box change timing?

I'm aware of how most alter fuel delivery (tapped and not tapped), but how does a conservative box, such as the EZ, advance timing? School me.

I believe it alters the signal through the data plug. The ez plug into the data plug and the map sensor. The map sensor is used to modify fueling and the data signal is for timing advance.

Yup, it modifies the "timing message" on the data bus to the pump. SOunds easy but, harder than you might think to change it.

Thanks. I just wanted to be sure that the ottomind was a fuel only module. It taps the pump wire and alters the TPS and MAP signals. That's it. So I think it's safe to say it doesn't do timing, which means it's safe to stack with a timing box.
