How do you talk to someone that thinks they have it all figured out?

Question How do you talk to someone that thinks they have it all figured out?

The father-in-law bought a used 2002, 2500 4x4 automatic, QC. He is looking for more H.P. to tow his RV in the hills, and knows I have a "chip" on my truck.

Well, he asked my opinion about what he should get a few weeks ago. I told him I prefer Edge Products because they work, and have excellent customer service. I said allot of "chip makers" products dont live up to their advertised HP.

He says he wants 300 hp, and that he is going to buy a Superchips microtuner because it adds like 70 horses (?). He says since his engine is 235 hp stock, that this chip should get him there. (all i could do was laugh)

I told him first off that 235 is @ the flywheel. and it will never happen with the box he wants. And that 300 horses will smoke his auto tranny. And without guages, he will screw allot of stuff up pulling in the hills @ 300 hp & auto tranny.

Well, he didnt want to hear it. He thinks that he is getting a good deal becuase of the tire size recalibrator, code reader, and extra 70 HP all-in-one. I re-inforced my belief in guages, intake, exhaust, and left him alone.

Needless to say, he is going to be dissappointed in more ways than one.

I tested a Superchips tuner on my 2002.

As far as the seat of my pants were concerned it didn't do anything.
I was not impressed in the slightest.

That 70 horses it claims to deliver will get eaten up by the torque converter in no time, leaving very little getting to the ground, IMHO anyway.

All it seemed to do was make my exhaust smell funky and the engine idle different.

You've told him exactly what you should have. All your arguements are right on. Now just sit back and get ready with the "I told you so!"

Just make sure that when you give him that told you so that it's at the top of a hill you just passed him on pulling the same type load.

Then ask him if them 70 horses looked like this

Of course he may look at you like this

A HILL in Texas , and when they say "it's just down the road", that's a 4 hr. drive That has to be the flatest place I've ever been, and Palmetto, you should be grinning like a chessire cat when you say I told you so. but then tell him how sorry you are that he killed his truck, ask for his credit card and then get it FIXED the right way.

Look at the bright side:

He has a CTD,
You will have access to a superchips microtuner (don't they read and clear codes?)

Take the high road - you gave him your opinion - backed it with sound data and logic - let it go at that.

If this all goes as it appears it will - he will respect your opinion alot more in the future and probably your wife will also.

All you have to do is say "gee that is to bad, I was worried that might happen" with a look of concern (no smirks).

Good luck

His truck is putting down around 190 to the tires... I've dyno tested hypertech, superchips, and edge ez on a stock truck.. The superchips tuner is the better of the two tuners but less horse power than an edge ez. The tuner woudln't be bad choice as his truck is still under warrenty and its easy to remove when you need warrenty work. but, with just the tuner he wont be putting down more than 235 RWHP.

If you're lucky. We sold several Superchips Cummins tuners when they first hit the market, and only 1 of 10 actually provided us with 40 HP. The others were in the realm of 20-30 BHP, and were terrible ponies (lots of timing rattle). I like the Superchips Tuners for the Fords, but the for the Cummins, they are a terrible product.

I don't....... I state my case once and if they still choose to go their own way, I let go of the reigns and cut them loose. But, I usually show up again like a bad penny to give them a "What's wrong?".

I even mentioned this website, and that there are always good deals on used products on here. I offered to try and find a "used" EZ for him, but that was no-go. I even told him that I bought mine off of here, and sent it to EZ to have it looked at. They sent me a brand new one, and I didnt even ask them too! How is that for customer service?

Atleast I will have access to a code reader/re-setter as GANDREWS stated.

The reasone he is so hung on the S.C. tuner is that his brother has one on his '02 PSD, and it runs pretty good (for an auto). He also thinks his truck is putting out 300hp. (which it is deffinately not by my seat-o-pants dyno, but what can you tell someone that can do simple math? 235+70=305!!)

My wifes uncle has a '95 cummins/5speed with about a #10 plate in it shoved forward. That thing runs!! I know he is close to 300. I told the F-IN-law to go ride in it, and then he would know what 300 feels like.

I am amazed at how many people run these trucks with no gauges. I can count 5 guys right now that are running atleast 50-100 hp over stock with no gauges. One guy has been running at Comp for along time without any. When I mention gauges to them, they just make faces as if they could are less.

Im gonna keep you guys updated on this. Maybe I should recommend one of those throttle body spacers Summitt is selling. lol

You don't. Out in West Texas where I grew up, we used to say that "You can't help a man who doesn't want to be helped."

There are some decent hills in Texas. Try U.S. 281/290 coming into Johnson City from the south. Or I-10W heading into Kerrville. Or Tx 17 from Balmorhea into Fort Davis as you climb into the Davis Mountains. Of course, even towing our 13,500 lb 36' 5th wheel, I don't have to come out of 6th gear for any of them!

Never laugh at the FiL, they don't seem to appreciate humor, especially if they are the end of it.
