Question high egt ?

hi guys , just got back off a highway cruise and noticed that during our ride at 55 mph in o.d. @ 2psi boost that my egt was running 600 deg.. I tryed coasting a while, the temp would drop to 350 until id get back up to 55, then back to 600 on flat ground. never seen it get that hot empty. is this normal or would a diff. air box be what i might need. have k&n now.

thanks, mooseman

If that is a pre-turbo number, it is well within spec.

that's around 900-1000 pre turbo. I've got an EZ and exhaust, and I can only go over 900 at WOT. Is this somthing that just started happening? I don't have any answers, but it's something that I'd definately look into farther. If you were climbing a hill, that wouldn't be so bad, but not on flat ground @ 55mph.

Check to make sure that none of your intercooler boots are leaking. Check for boost leaks as well. Sounds like your not getting enough air in there.

With my truck I notice that if I run the rpm low or have the boost low the EGT's are higher than at higher rpm or boost. What happens when you drive faster or drop out of OD? 600 degs with a stock truck sounds high. I run that but I have a box and injectors. How much boost can you run at wot?

Only 20psi with the EZ? Sounds like you don't have any sort of restrictor or turnbuckle or anything on the turbo wastegate. Tweaking the wastegate will allow the turbo to build more boost and push more air through the engine. That might help you bring the EGT's down some.

Those EGTs ARE high, and I would say a boost shoartage is a likely culprit. Because you have the weenie HY turbo, you should have more than 2psi of boost at 55mph. It may be a leak (hard to track down), or it might be a wastegate issue.

I just fixed my boost leak. Turned out there was a small crack in the boost gauge line. Replaced it all with 1/4" line (was 1/8"). Peak boost is now 31psi, instead of the 26psi I had before.

Before I added injectors, I could hit 26psi with JUST my EZ. Since you have the smaller turbo, you should have MORE than 26psi with just an EZ. Closer to 28, I'd guess.

***I HIGHLY RECOMMENDMOVING YOUR PYRO TO A PRE-TURBO LOCATION. I DID AFTER RUNNING POST-TURBO FOR SOME TIME AND WISH I WOULD HAVE MOVED IT MUCH SOONER***

I have an '01 with an auto and the weenie HY35 as well. I bought an EZ used from a guy in CO and it did not come with anything else (elbow for HX's or restrictor for HY's). I'm current running the EZ with no other tweaks to the turbo and all I get is 20 psi max. I'm not seeing anywhere near the temps (corrected, I'm pre-turbo) that mooseman is. I do want to tweak the turbo and build some more boost to see what differences it will make.

Oil in the turbo is not normal. Other a fine mist fron using a K&N/AFE oiled type air filter, you shouldn't see any. Cruise boost is low. Top end should be mid 20's with a wastegate mod. 20 is about right stock, but it would be hard to tell if it was off a little because the wastegate could compensate by opening later.

Might be a good time to upgrade. Even a stock HX35 would be a big improvement over the HY. There was one listed in the classified section here.

Good luck.

Boyd.

If you have oil in the turbo you should check how far it extends into the tubing to the intercooler. If the tubes are oil gunked you can assume the intercooler is also. An oily cooler will not allow adequate heat transfer and could result in high egts.

I have the HY turbo and it's a tough little turbo. When I had my comp, I would push 35 out of it without even thinking. I even cracked 40 once. EGT's were never an issue (pre OR post turbo). My EGT's were actually lower with the Comp on than without it. With the comp, I would be lucky to crack 980* pre turbo up hill full throttle. Without it, I can hit 1100* pre turbo on flat ground. I have a BHAF and a 4" straight pipe. I highly recommend getting the boost up. It sounds like you simply aren't getting enough boost.
