help with diagnosis . . . running hot, smokey, and sluggish with new turbo

ok, so my truck is as is in my sig (except for turbo)

the ED turbo in the sig is broken and i have been running a stock 35 turbo with everything else in my sig. i have recently upgraded the 35 to a used garret gt3782r from a local member on here. we put the turbo on earlier today, fired it up, and everything seemed ok. we then took it for a test drive expecting great things but found the truck to be sluggish and smokey with high egt's. we then returned home and checked for boost leaks - found nothing major, if anything at all.

we thought maybe it was a boost leak causing this, but that seems to not be the case. the thing that really stumps me is the fact it is MORE smokey and HOTTER now than it was with the stocker . . .

the garrett was working fine when it came off a truck set up similar to mine. it had no problems building boost and controlling egt.

now that boost leaks have been checked for . . . what do i check next or what could it be given the above info/situation.

any and all help is GREATLY appreciated!

Whats the actual boost and the rpm it hits at, and EGT?

Bigger turbos are gonna run hotter and take longer to spool than the stocker, no two ways about it. How much is the question. They will run cooler at full boost.

Something seems odd with your truck. I drove that turbo for 3 hours the day before and everything worked decently. Must have pulled a few 40psi pulls during my drive. That turbo has real decent street manors for a slightly bigger single turbo than stock. I know Tate you can spool your garrett up pretty fast

yes, something is not quite right. i have alamo rebuilding my s362 right now. we'll see what it's like with it on.

with tates stocker everything ran and seemed fine, but my truck just didn't agree with the garrett for some reason. oh well, if the rebuilt s362 doesn't work out - i'll start saving my pennies for twins . . .

A high stall converter help reduce the spool-up laggyness. My 02 has a 1800-2000 rpm triple disk in it, had a low rpm stall once. It was a piece of junk, you could do 35mph without touching the throttle. A real beast when towing, originally it was marketed as tow converter. You put the truck in gear and the truck would stall. You had to rev the truck up to keep it running.

that sounds like my truck now, at idle it rolls fairly quickly while in gear, plus if the engine is cold it will stall unless i rev it up or do light neutral drops . . .

Jason, have you done a stall test to see where the converter will flash to? Its a good idea to do that with the ebrake on as hard as you can and use full brakes. That way you get a better idea what the converter true stall is.

Every laughs that my converter stall so high, but it is has very decent street manors. Helps to spool-up those sluggish turbos with more engine rpm's.

Whos converter you running in the truck? Been thru putting the truck into gear and stalling issue. It to do with the converter impeller/stator design. It gets worse with running big sticks.
