got the plate slid back, now truck is slow

well, i got sick of getting 13mpg. took it to shop to get timing done and had the plate slid back. the truck is VERY slow off the line and puts out zero smoke. i moved the starwheel full forward, but still no smoke. I dont know if theres really a question here, but it sucks alot to have less power. is it possible to have the plate slid more forward and advance the timing, and still get good mileage? im hopin to get about 20 mpg after moving the plate back.

Welcome to the site. It sounds like you got your plate slide to far back. My friend tried the same thing to increase his mileage, it didn't really help him either. I don't think that sliding your plate really makes a difference in mileage. We kind of gears do you have? If you fill in your sig we will be able to help you more. Go to user cp to fill it in, it is at the top of the page.

Really need to know the truck year, 4x4 or not, flavor of transmission and knowing the gearing helps as well.

Oh, seeing how this is your first post,

Welcome to the site.

i filled out my sig. im gonna do a search and figure out how to slide that plate myself. theres that one bolt or screw that has the round head. i dont think i can stand for the truck to be so slow. i dont even get any boost in first gear. it goes okay after in 2nd gear. anyone in utah who can advance the timing?

Seems to me the plate location should have no effect on mileage. But backing it off will keep your right foot from fueling it too much. But on the highway, the motor will only use what it needs to sustain a certain speed, so you could have no plate at all and get the same mileage. The plate just limits the maximum amount of fuel at a given RPM.

Here's instuctions on how to install a new plate, you should be able to gleen enough out of it to slide your plate forward. There will be quite a few steps you can skip. Remember a little goes a long way, work in .05 inch increments

I think 20 might be slightly unrealistic with the auto and 4x4., but you can get close to it. You're on the right track- setting up the timing can be a big help and it can also cut EGTs some.

If you haven't already, you might want to install a boost controller or boost elbow. It will help burn that extra fuel a little better. Boost "rule of thumb": 1 psi / 10 hp. The HX35 is good for up to 35 psi before the efficiency goes south.

You could get greater satisfaction in the plate department with a #10 plate. It is the most versatile and can be adjusted from mild to wild by sliding it.

You might consider losing the stock muffler and getting an air intake system like the Scotty II.

Of course NONE OF THIS IS ADDICTIVE, YOU CAN QUIT AT ANY TIME (yeah, right )

a boost elbow? im gonna have to research that a little. i tried to adjust the wastegate by turning the nut thats on a threaded shaft under the turbo. it leads down to a cylander shaped thing. but when i loosened the nut, nothing happened other then the nut was backed off of what it was seated against. i couldnt get the threaded shaft to move. i dont know if that is how you adjust the wastegate.

Black smoke is unburnt fuel, with the plate too far back you aren't getting enough fuel. I know exactly what you're talking about, I've driven rigs with the plate too far back, totally gutless.

went for a test drive. accelerates nicely and only a little black smoke. i turned the starwheel back towards the cab, and everything seems to working nicely. exept for the stripped out bolt hole. so to anyone who decides to slide the plate back, it simple. just be careful about how much you tighten down those four little bolts. And of course, it wasnt me who overtightened them.

The wastgate is not adjustable except by using an add-on device.

A boost elbow is a fitting that replaces the elbow that comes off the turbo outlet. From there the hose goes to the wastgate diaphram. The modified elbow has an orifice to slow the pressure going to the wastegate, thus allowing more boost before the wg opens.

A boost controller like I use is sort of a mini regulatoor that installs in that same line to the wg. It is more accurate, adjustable, and holds the maximum setting at a steady pressure (any time the fuelling is high enough to reach the max setting).
It is a fairly simple combination of parts, I can make one for you and mail it for a very small cost- PM me if want more info.
