Gooseneck Hitch
Gooseneck Hitch
My Dad just bought a 99 Dodge CTD 2500 QUADCAB sb. It is going to be a secondary pulling truck for the stock trailers on the Ranch. I need some help finding a gooseneck hitch for it. He has the Screw in style on his 99 Ford PSD and would like the same style for this truck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Ben
Re:Gooseneck Hitch
Draw-tite is the brand of choice for me! Installed it myself , no welding required. IT's called Remove-a-ball and it sure is handy to pull up a lever and make the truck bed floor completely flat with the top of the liner.
Re:Gooseneck Hitch
I just put a B&W Turnover Ball in the 2003 and it was a breeze. Really surprised at how well everthing fit and bolted into place, no welding or drilling. Just pull the lever and flip the ball over upside down and it is gone and out of your way.
Re:Gooseneck Hitch
I put my Putnum Lock & Load gooseneck in and very easy bolt on installation. They also have a 5th wheel adaptor like the B&W.

http://www.putnamhitch.com/Gooseneck/lockload.htm

Been very trouble free (3 years) and rated for 25K lbs.
Re:Gooseneck Hitch
This is my second truck with the B & W. I like the turnover feature. The first one I paid to have installed, the second one I did myself. I found it new on ebay for a reasonable price. The install was straight forward - except for drilling a 4" hole in the bed - you just bolt it in.

Ben,
I think any of the removable ball systems are great, I custom made mine with a diamond hitch blank. Good system and it works well. Being your are in Elko you get a little weather, I personaly would shy away from the fold over type, we had one of these on the ranch in MT. and it was froze most of the winter. It seemed to collect hay, mineral, dirt and the likes. I had one in a pavement pounder and it worked great. But not so good for ranch work. Stick with a removable or turn over.
Just my two cents,
Good luck.

Re:Gooseneck Hitch
Yeah the folding types are no good. If they get dirt or anything in the hitch, it's almost impossible to get it to fold. I've also seen quite a few in older trucks that have rusted closed. We had one in a ranch truck for about 6 years, and it became loose and you could feel it wobble with a trailer on it. Not too good.
Re:Gooseneck Hitch
The B&W is the brand that I have in My Ford but it stays down for the most part. Its a little tough to change when the weather gets bad. Our Ford dealer has the screw in type like he has in his Ford, they sell it for $150. Dad very seldomly needs to take it out.

Thank you all for your replys,

Ben

P.S. I'm new to the 2nd gen dodges so I'm sure that i'll have more ?'s for you.
Re:Gooseneck Hitch
Ben,
One of my trucks is a shortbed and I would add caution that some trailers will interfere with the cab on tight turns. I think that you will be okay with the stock trailers but you may want to mount the ball over the axle instead of ____inchs ahead. Larry
