Good News and Bad News
Yet another case for precision polishing the ring grooves and lands. This what separates the primo pistons from the cheapies. By primo I mean Bill Miller, Ross, Mahle (for cast, anyway), Wiseco, JE. etc...
There are others. BME is my favorite..just wish they had more mopar pistons

Yeah, I like TotalSeal rings. They are nice, but I went with something different this time around. Hot water circulation is being considered and is used by my guy with the Sunnen. Instead of the Scotchbrite they run a piece of 600 and then 800 through the bores on the hone a few strokes to finish up. Hot honing oil is a good idea Zino! Geesh it never ends. Some guys are going so far as to bolt on all the main caps and the oil pumps, etc to simulate everything they can fas far as distortion goes. I will get this engine to seal if it takes all week. Even if it has to come back out to find the best method to make this happen. Time will tell if my ring choice is/was good or not!
Did anyone read that post last winter from the guy who did not tq plate hone the cylinders in his Cummins? It was out over .004 thou in many places of the bore. How sad. He could see light gaps between the bare ring and cylidner wall while he was fitting them near TDC.

The larger the bore is, the tougher it is to maintain a given clearance. TQ plates are the bare minimum IMHO. Machine work for Pro Stock is VERY VERY precise. These guys have valve seat tolerance held at .0001"! By comparison, a Top Fuel or Funny Car engine (basically the same) is just "slapped" together.
I generally feel it's agood idea to bolt on as much stuff as you can and still perform the honing. V-8s are tougher to machine than an I-6, because the head distortions act in 90° different directions. At least, I'd think you could do Main caps, oil pump, and tq plates.
I too like the Total Seal rings in a lot of applications. Sometimes, though, the extra bore friction offset the better sealing. In a high-revving NA engine, I'd go file-fit. Engines with power adders like NOS, turbocharger, etc.-- those are the ones that seem to work best with Total Seal rings.
The lower the RPM range of the engine, the better the Total Seal rings perform. I wonder if any NASCAR team are using them; last I heard, they ALL used file-fit.

DON what components are you running on your motor. I am trying to get some info on what to put on my 12v to get big HP with a single turbo but still use as a semi daily driver and be able to tow a 10,000 lb trailer several times a year. Any help you can give me would be a great help!
