It goes like stink with a #10!!
Man, just put a #10 plate in. Wow!, really comes out of the hole strong! I can see how a stock tranny can become trash in a hurry. But it sure feels good!
I have it mounted just about the stock location, actually a little back from the stock location (about .030) towards firewall. Smoke is not bad at all. Afc cover is in the stock location as well. I'm trying to nurse the tranny, and don't really want allot of smoke. Seems to be pretty good right where it is. No smoke if I drive normal, and not that bad if I get on it. Trying to just get a good tow rig.
I did notice while in lock up, say at the lower end of the rpm range while in OD lock up (about 50 mph's), if I get on it, it really seems to lug and nothing is there. I noticed it at first when I installed my 3k gsk, but seems a little more noticeable with the new plate. It's like it needs to down shift out of lock-up but does not. I hit the stock OD button and that takes care of that problem.
Boost is about 26-28lbs, I was running about 18-19 lbs (the most I could get) before the plate was installed. I did not try to get any higher on the boost, I would back down at about 3000 rpm's.
The hottest I got (stock exhaust, k&n), was 1050, but wonder what thats gonna be like when I tow 6-7000lbs.
Yes, the #10 and the GSK is a winning combo, except for the tranny. Kevin

Glad you like it! I dont have a #10, but basically have the same setup, and i love it, except my EGT's are worse than yours. Your towing EGT's should be fine if they're ok right now. You should be able to run it as hard as you want, and be fine. I think you will be ok.

"Getting on it" in lower rpm and TC locked up is the best way to trash your trany, especially if you "tow 6-7000lbs". Something is going to slip with that much torque.
Don't let the TC lockup when you are "getting on it" either. The slop converter oftens times cannot hold and you go past the coupling. A high engine rpm at shift doesn't mean the transmission is keeping up. You'll roast the clutch material.
You can give yourself a little more low boost fueling by sliding the AFC to midway in the slots.
Past around 2,600 rpm the 12 valve starts running out of air. Not going past 3,000 is really smart. That's when the pyro climbs faster than the tach.
You have the added rpm band to keep the rpm up in 3rd for average driving and then going to OD once cruising fast.
Yes, you said pretty much what I was thinking. Lugging an engine is no good, and worse for the tranny. This was my first trial run after putting in the plate. I was actually surprised the tranny did not slip while I did this 50 mph "get on it" while in OD lugging thing. Rest assured, it will not be a common occurance
This was the first run, and I was trying out different things, just to see what it would do. Actually, I did the freeway runs (50 mph's then give it the pedal to see what it would do) before I did the city "traffic light jack rabbit start". The F-150 never had a chance.
I use the the od on/off button often when towing. I usually leave the OD off when getting on the freeway, then when I get to about 60-65, I push the switch to let the OD kick in, and just cruise along at 70-75 mph's. Any hunting and it's slow down and turn off od. The reason I installed the gsk was because the engine would defuel just when I needed it the most-getting up to speed on the entrance ramp while towing. In michigan, if your not doing at least 70 at that point, man your getting run over.
Have not towed since the addition of the 3k gsk and the #10, but I plan on the same approach. Keep it out of lock up till at freeway speed, then put it into lock up for the steady, level cruising.
Thanks for the advice/warning about the "lugging" thing. I do know better. I just want to make sure that this is normal and not a problem with my setup (concerned about the need FOR some fine tuning with the GSK, or the "secret gov. lever adjustment"). The lever is adjusted to be just above the bottom edge of the plate, so I feel fairly confident that this is "normal"?
Thanks again for the warning. Not sure about moving the afc forward. It has more get up and go I than I ever expected, and that is at the stock location. Kevin
