Fuel Pressure Line Leaks

I'm getting set to install my gauges, finally! Thanx Rod! (Gratuitous plug ) Sparkchaser has suggested a braided steel for the fuel line vs. something else. Although I agree that having a line mishap in the cab is NOT a good thing, I was curious what expierences have been from those of you that have gauges already. Any problems in this area? Especially from those of you running larger hp's than just us stockers? Is this an upgrade that could perhaps be put off for now being stock, but done when I step up a few ponies?

Thanx for the input!

Re:Fuel Pressure Line Leaks

You will be okay running a stock truck without a pyro or boost gauge. However, any ISB, stock or BOMBED, is taking a big chance without a good fuel pressure gauge installed. Here at Freightliner, we get on average about 2 to 3 trucks a week for VP44 failures. All due in part to not catching the lift pump dying in time.

If anything, hook the gauge up temporarily and take it for a spin. This will at least give you an idea of where your idle fuel psi and WOT psi is.

Re:Fuel Pressure Line Leaks

Monty...I guess I misstated myself. The gauges are on order n' just awaiting them from the guys in brown. ;D But what I wanted to know was, after the installation of pyro, boost n' fuel...has anyone had problems with ruptured fuel pressure gauge lines. Do I need to upgrade the line from pump to gauge with my stock fuel psi's or should I spend the cash n' do it now and install braided instead of risking a mishap. I still can't see where running stock this should be a prob with good pressurized fuel line.

Re:Fuel Pressure Line Leaks

Fuel pressures will not go up after modifications. In fact, they will go down. This is why guys have to install a pusher pump to help up the fuel psi to the VP. The fuel psi gauge measures low psi fuel not the high psi out of the delivery valves and on to the injectors. Hope this anwsers part of your question. :-

Any type of good diesel rated hose should be fine for the time being.

Re:Fuel Pressure Line Leaks

But what about a leaking gauge/line in the cab? I guess that is more the question instead of a ruptured line. If installation is done properly, it shouldn't be. Is diesel running down the pillar, dash n' floorboards now a new concern once I have installed the gauge? Do I really need to upgrage to a stainless line that is another $100 simply for peace of mind, or because it is a neccessity?

Re:Fuel Pressure Line Leaks

To be honest with you, the only problem I have seen with a fuel pressure gauge leaking was on a 2001 that had the Isspro gauge (in the A pillar) with the braided steel line. This wasnt the lines problem though, it was an internal failure inside the gauge that caused it to leak out of the back fitting.

Re:Fuel Pressure Line Leaks

I'm using the Isspro gauge with the braided line from Rod at Wildcat.
No leaks in 2 years.
Do it right once with quaility parts, and you won't have to worry about it again.

Guess I'll respond to your email here, JD ;D

The stainless braided line won't cost you extra, as we include it with our fuel pressure gauge kit. We prefer the stainless braided over tubing, as we worry about chafing of the tubing as it runs through the firewall. As for leaks, we've only had one rig leak in over 300 installs, and that was DipStick Scotty, who didn't realize you can't put a female swivel fitting onto an NPT male fitting, and expect it to seal
