I have a 2 gauge pillar mount; one hole is for the egt, boost gauge; I was going to use the second hole for a fuel pressure gauge; But I read in Genos catalogue, that a fuel pressure gauge isn't necessary on this truck because of the mechanical lift pump, and if it fails; the vp will be OK.

Opinions?

What other gauge should I consider?

 

What you read in genos catalogue is true...no gauge is necessary on the 12 valves. However, it is most certainly a good idea as to monitor press. and its also been suggested to use it as a minder for the fuel filter change intervals.

Another thing, if Im reading your post correctly, you have a quote regarding the VP...this is the injector pump that is used on the 98.5 and up 24 valve cummins. Our 12 valves us Bosch P7100 mechanical injector pumps or "P-pumps".

But to answer your question, I would install a reputable gauge to monitor press. Or you can install a low fuel press. indicator light. This will illuminate if the press. drops too low, to give you an idea if the lift pump is failing.
Since you have the mount, just put in a matching gauge!

If it fails, the P7100 will indeed be OK.

But it is sure nice to have that pressure gauge there to help see other problems, LP failure, fuel filter/Pre-filter, Overflow valve issues, etc..........

 

Don't waste your time with a low pressure light, since they are tailored for 24v's. Get a good gauge on there, atleast to 60 psi. Lift pumps don't often go bad, but overflow valves do get weak and lower operating pressure. When I got my truck, it was 14psi. Bumped it up to 40, ran a lot better.

The instructions recommend using the plug on top of the fuel filter nearest the center. Is this the best place for it to monitor post filter (clean side)?

Drill and tap the banjo bolt on the P-7100 input. Dont forget to use a needle valve or pressure snubber.

My fuel filter lid didn't have any plugs like my 24v. I drilled the banjo like the Doc is saying. If you drill it from the threaded end, a letter R or 11/32" drill bit just about self centers in it.

 

Tap it from the outside though...
