Wastegates prevent overspooling and overheating. I was able to push the truck to 500 hp while keeping the turbo inside it's map... at 42 psi.
Without my external WG, I was at 62 psi at 500 hp and losing power. The reason for this is the boosted air coming from the turbo was overheated.
The higher boost #'s were from expansion pressure (due to heat) as opposed to compression pressure.
Most factory turbos can't do this because they can not 'waste' as much exhaust gas as an external WG!
I was still a bit overfueled, with the smoke not totally clearing up. But the WG kept EGT's as low as possible and protected the turbo from over reving and from over heating.
Worked well and saved some money..... till I added even more fuel.

Blow off valves help with barking, wastegate is different. Turbos come with wastegates so that they can run a tight housing for good spool and still flow more air around the turbine. Best of both worlds- good spool and no choke or turbo overspeed.

Is the turbo overboosting/ overheating or barking?

A wastegate and a BOV both serve different purposes. Its not an either/or situation in my book. A wastegate is to limit boost to within the turbo's operating map. A BOV is to release the extra air from the intake tract when you close the throttle.

Barking is when you let off quickly the boost comes back through the turbo causing the turbo to stall causing the barking sound.

you will hear the noise when you let off under heavy throttle. its not so much that your in trouble its just you need to ease off the throttle
