Re:Emjay Strategy Controller

Will this controller control downshifts as well? It would be nice to get these trannies to down shift quicker sometimes.

Re:Emjay Strategy Controller

The shift curve adjustments do affect downshifts, too. If you're referring to closed throttle downshifts (like going around a corner), you (or the distributor that sets it up for you) can make it pretty "snappy" in the corners, meaning it'll downshift to 1st at a higher speed. There is a lot of fine-tunability, it really depends on your tastes, and the limits of adjustment.

Re:Emjay Strategy Controller

UPS just delivered the Emjay Engineering LLC Strategy Controller to me!, I will be hooking it up right after Christmas and will add a second installment to the Article showing what it does with a stock tranny with a little over 105,000 miles on it.

The next step will then be showing it with upgraded modifications.

I want to mention how very impressed I am with the kit that comes with the controller. Obviously Emjay Engineering LLC has given a great deal of consideration to the needs of the end consumer, and they supply a superb installation kit with their product.

They supply both End butt connectors and the improved scotch locks so that you can install it the way easiest for you.

The software and installation instructions are provided on CD and they too are geared to make the installation a painless procedure. Also included were phone #'s and email addresses should you encounter difficulties of any kind.

A very professional looking kit that will no doubt aid in a succesful install for anyone with rudementary mechanical abilities.

Thank You Mike Steiger at Emjay Engineering LLC!

If the family can't locate me on Christmas day, a good bet will be to check the garage

Re:Emjay Strategy Controller

I would like to say that this controller sounds pretty exciting.I do have several questions on it's operation,so please bear with me if these questions have already been answerd, and where to find them on this post. So here goes. ???I understand that you can control the shift points on a stock trans, but TCC control on a stock trans i would be really interested in. So would i be able to control the TCC at 1-2 upshift and keep it engaged until a 2-1 downshift, Even if you have to make modifications to the valvebody. I am familiar with the 47RE so i wouldn't mind if i had to get into it. Money isn't there to invest in a upgraded torque converter,so i was wondering if it would be ok to control the stock one like this, and would it hold up to mild towing and exhaust brake operation. Thanks for your patience TGCTD ;D

Re:Emjay Strategy Controller

You can control the lock up of the torque converter extensively However using it with an E-brake and a stock TC will most likely cause premature failure.

The stock converter and tranny is not strong enough to handle the added stress of an E-Brake from everything I hear about on the subject.

Re:Emjay Strategy Controller

I'll try not to beat this to death. With the trans experiance i have had,the troubles with these Dodge trannies that i have seen has been with the smaller 42-46RE's. I have seen very few of the 47RE's grenade unless you are pulling loads well over 10K. I guess what i would be lookng for would be the elimination of that slipping feeling of the stock converter on acceleration, more so than a braking action. With this in mind do you think i could get away with the controller only until upgrading the converter could be afforded, as sort of a beginning stepping stone to more mods.Keep in mind the truck is stock, and the 47RE holds up good without any increases in torque mods,or is it just on the edge of self destruction. At this point i was lucky just to afford the truck, and with what i have estimated with just wanting to add torque convter, valvebody and E-brake i'm up to an additional $ 3-4000. Or should just stop pipe dreaming and get out the wallet?(My wife would kill me on this one :-[) Sorry if i am beating this to death. TGCTD

Re:Emjay Strategy Controller

Not to be sorry, these forums are here for just these types of questions, and we all have them about one area of our trucks or another.

I am not a transmission expert, but in reading up on my own I have found that the TC is probably the weakest link and getting a good one before adding an exhaust brake is definately warranted.

I will be adding one to my truck as well as a valve body and also a new clutch pack. I have seen too many post's here where only a few short months after any power modifications the tranny begins failing. This is why I am beefing up the tranny first and then the rest will follow.

The article I am working on now will show the types of improvements gained by adding a TC and a valve body to your stock tranny. It will also show the advantages the Strategy can give you in over all control of the stock tranny as well as the modified one.

I hope that it will be able to answer some more of your questions and perhaps others will join in here for you as well.

For my money, Tranny is the first thing to modify if you do not want to damage your truck.

Re:Emjay Strategy Controller

Thanks for all the info I will definitely be watching these articles. I agree that the trans is the place to start on these trucks,i guess as a DC tech that i am dissappointed in the DC engineers, that they didn't have the forsight of harnessing the awsome capabilities of the CTD. By the way i don't know if anyone is aware that there is a TSB out there to look for tampering with the injection pump/wireing, if a failure should occur, which i have been told will now void the entire powertrain warranty. But DC will let you put a 800# plow blade on the front of a V/6 Dakota

Re:Emjay Strategy Controller

TGCTD- In my personal opinion the RE47 will last if the power stays stock and the tranny is maintained properly. And the truck is operated within the specs. So, IMHO, DC is not to be blamed. They do sell a package that works.
I do not have too much experience on the US trannies, but some amount on Japanese and German trannies. My experienge showed that if there is a very small malfunction or misadjustment in the trannie any modification will bring it over the border and grenade the tranny. Some mods you can do to a tranny will mask problems that are there. So my 2c, before any modification of the truck, you should verify that everything is OK with the components.
I think that a lot of the problems that are blamed on some aftermarket devices did not arise because of the device itself being bad, but because you put just that little more stress on some other component to get over the safety margin.
I think that what I understood when asking Bill Kondolay from DTT makes sense: Basically if there is a hole somewhere it will reduce hydraulic pressure and therefore may reduce clamping force.
Personally I'd pressure test and service the tranny to be shure that all those seals and whatchacallems ( tiny little parts in the tranny) are OK before any bombing. This is my deduction from the fact that some people seem to get away with some power mods on the stock tranny even when towing and some others wreck the tranny while running empty and stock.

Handing the soapbox back....

AlpineRAM
