Emissions Testing

I just found out that my county is going to start emissions testing on all cars in '05. Has anyone ever smog tested their truck to see how it fairs? Do large injectors put it waaaay off the map? I know I can always swap in the stockers and unplug the boxes and be fine, but I'm curious.

Re:Emissions Testing

It depends on the type of test. Also, newer trucks (24V) may not be tested by sniffing the exhaust - they can plug into the PCM. One other thing to keep in mind is that some states limit testing to vehicles less than 10K lbs. Over that and your exempt. If your state conducts a snap test - i.e. punching the throttle, then depending on how smokey it is it may fail. I'm sure they'll give you a free retest if you fail the first one. Go with the easy stuff disconnected and if it still fails then change the injectors back to stock if needed (for the day of course).

Re:Emissions Testing

My state has been testing for awhile now, and it's not a big deal. On diesels they look for the right fuel tank cap, and do a little sniff test. They are looking for how much soot the put out. The test is done with you at an idle, and you are aloud 10 parts per million. I always test as one of there "cleanest" trucks, the last 2 times thru My truck blew a .1 part per million. They always comment on how clean it test, good thing I don't have to floor it!

Re:Emissions Testing

I'm not sure how Maryland works with Diesel Emissions testing for our rigs. I know with the gassers you have to get them tested every 2 years and they put your car on the dynamometer or will test via the OBDII connector. If you have a CEL, you automatically fail.

Re:Emissions Testing

Here in Colorado (at least the part that has to test)they just test for opacity on the diesels. They do it on a dyno , they check at idle and then check it as they run it up to 40 or 50mph under a load. An ez is no problem. The comp you can turn off. I think around here if your running bigger than dd3's you might start having a problem.

Re:Emissions Testing

NJ does what they call a "snap test." They put a probe in your tailpipe and tell you to stomp on the gas. They measure the opacity of the smoke. What really sucks about it is that it's done at roadside checkpoints, and it doesn't matter if you aren't from NJ, you gotta do it anyway. If you pass, you get a 1 year sticker, if you fail you get a "fix it" ticket that promises all sorts of fines for noncompliance. Glad I don't live in the PDRNJ (People's Democratic Republic of NJ), unfortunately I have to visit 2 or 3 times a week.
