Every set I have installed came with a probe. They were all 1/8 NPT and required a R size bit. Some are 1/4 NPT, but I have not seen any of those.

Agree 1/8 NPT is the most standard and Yes an R bit is best but I just used a new 5/16 no problems at all. An R bit would be better but not as easy to find at least in my many trips to the chain stores.

It was just stated in a post a few days ago, most people worry about this, drilling and tapping the manifold, more than anything else. I was in that category until I finally did it. It's really easy, just take your time. Buy a new tap and drill bit and that 15 minutes, all it takes will be done with.

Good luck

The R bit was hard to ind, but I finally came across one at a local hardware store. None of the chains had it. I, too, was nervous as a cat about drilling the manifold or the first time. Just make sure you have a sharp bit, go slow, and keep the bit and tap straight. Don't forget to fish out all of those loose shavings, though.

I loosen all the nuts on the turbo almost as far as they will go, then cut a piece of cardboard to slide between the turbo and manifold. Drill and tap the manifold, start the truck for about 4 seconds, cut it off, tighten the turbo up, thread the probe in, then im done. That way you know no shavings get into the turbo, and it isnt that hard to do. I use a 21/64 drill bit.

Well i've done 4 probes and just use the grease.
Just grease up the drill bit and then the tap and they will hold most of the chips. then just use a small magnet to fish any straglers out.

I just grease up the tap, and then use a magnet before I put in te probe. I also use a shopvac to suck up the shavings while I drill.

I did the same thing, except with the house vacuum (my wife wasn't around to see that ). I put the vacuum nozzle about ½" away from where I drilled the manifold. I didn't do anything special when I tapped it (no grease on the tap). I did vacuum the hole to pull out as much shavings as possible. And then I stuck a powerful magnet to a small screwdriver and poked that into the hole and moved it around. I made a few passes with the magnet until I had no more shavings coming out. I also popped the intake hose off to observe the turbine. I spun it by hand to check for any binding (from a stray shaving) and then started the truck and checked the turbine again to make sure it wasn't stuck from a shaving blown into it. After everything looked good I installed the pyro probe into the manifold.
