'03 EGT Probe Location

I have been following the threads on EGT gauge installations.

I have an '03 and I want to make sure I am doing this right. I have attached a picture that shows the exhaust manifold and the red dot represents the intended probe location. The probe location will be 3/4 inch above the flange and centered on the rear passage.

The picture attached to the next topic simply shows more detail of the area.

Because the exhaust manifold is vertical at the probe location I don't think it would be possible to drill and tap the hole without chips falling down that could be removed by methods mentioned in other topics. Because of this I think I will have to do some unbolting to make a safe install.

What I am looking for is advice, comments and help from anyone who has made the install on an '03 before I get started. Also can someone recommend the best point to wire the gauge in.

Thanks for any and all help.

Re:'03 EGT Probe Location

Drafter,

You are in the exact spot of my installation. Works like a charm. You might want to consider the validity of the post just ahead of this and move to the front chamber. I am not aware of how many cylinders are included in the front and back section - - I assumed, possibly incorrectly, that it would be 3 and 3. ??? ??? (or, does a Cummin(g)s have 8 cylinders? )

I fully agree with the probability of chips falling into the hole. They did on mine no matter how hard I tried for it not to happen. I loosened the turbo, dropped it about 3/4", put a thin piece of cardboard in the slot, did my thing, then carefully removed it. There were shavings on the cardboard.

If you work at it, you can route your wiring thru the harness running along the firewall right under the windshield. I used the vacant rubber grommet just to the left and under my steering shaft to come thru the firewall. Pierce it with a small sharp knife and it will almost seal itself around the wires.

Have fun.

Re:'03 EGT Probe Location

Looks like the two posts have everything nailed. I put my probe in the forward chamber as well - but only because it was easier to reach than the back one. I aggree with the Fiver on droping turbo. I installed mine while I was putting the e-brake on - so I had everything half tore apart anyhow. There are several people that have done the 'run the engine' trick while drilling and tapping the hole...it sounds pretty good in theory, and will probably work just fine....but, with a $35,000 truck - I would take 20 minutes extra and drop the turbo and do the cardboard like the fiver recomends (thats exactly what I did) Also, you can take your time this way - I think you would be rushed trying to do it with the engine running.

Good luck

Rob
Re:'03 EGT Probe Location

I like putitng the probe in the rear section, as #6 cylinder on the new trucks is still the hottest running cylinder. I have been wondering if there is a difference with the 4 dumping together though and will be putting a probe up there as well.

Rod

Thanks to those that have replied. I can move on now with confidence that I have it right.

It's much better to start a project knowing you are doing it right as opposed to completing a project and wondering if it is right!

Must be a pain to drill that hole.
