EGT Probe Location ?

I've seen a couple of different locations for the EGT probe location. On one diesel power products website they put the probe on the top of the manifold as shown in their downloadable pdf files. Another location was where all the exhaust ports joined in the collector and enter the turbo housing. What is the best spot for the best results, or are they the same. The top location would definately be the easiest but is it correct ?

Manifold ?

By manifold do you mean the very top or down in the collector approx 2 inches above the turbo ?

Right side versus left side probably matters more to most folks. The general consensus is that the back three cylinders will run the hottest, so most people want to make sure they are monitoring those. The collector has a solid divider in it that runs right down the middle, so you want to put it off-center, slightly to the left so you measure the hottest side and don't drill into the divider. Whether you do this from the top or the side is more of a personal preference. From the top is definitely easier (check my gallery pics).

Also, depending on which probe you have, it may not fit in the side. Some are longer than others. The probe that came with my X-Monitor is really long and just holding it up there for an eye test, it was obvious I had no choice but to go down from the top. It was longer than the collector was wide.

Ive also heard the the best place is right before the flange where the header and turbo meet.

As they have all said it depends on the application. Banks says to install it in the after portion of the exhaust manifold. I have one the exhaust manifold and one in the exhaust pipe after the turbo after the down elbow. Gotta love those BOMBS
