Cheap mod for std. trans.......

If you have a std ya might like this as I discovered this by mistake. Had my shifter console out and upon reinstall forgot the 1st boot (bolts to floor under plastic console) I was amazed as how loud everything was ,could hear all sorts of things.. (So I put it back in and figured More might be better)
Now to the pt. -Pull your console (EZ) and put some sort of insulating foam around everything especially if you have 4 wd as there is none right around the transfer box lever. You will be amazed as to how much quieter the whole world just got !!
On the the shift levers- cut a big washer out of the foam put it on the gear levers so it follows the slot in the 1st layer, that way the noise is trapped there and not in the cabin.
I think you will luv it!! -- Coast? probably nothing

I'll have to look into that. Our 97 has a very annoying T-case shift noise that we take care of with a flash light in the boot next to the shifter. Which slides out regularly.

Thumbs up

I had thought of this a while back, but just hadn't gotten around to it. I had plenty of carpet padding lying around so after reading your post I decided to go do it. Took only 20 minutes or so. Decided to drive up to Lowe's for some parts and man, what a difference. I've spend a few $ on some noise deadening, but this is one of the best so far. Thanks for posting as it sparked me to go ahead an do this. Big Difference!

Hmmm, I'll bet even with a auto this may be a good thing. I would suspect there is a gap in insulation where the t case comes through. I'll have to check it out.

I would think it would help some too. I stuffed the carpet padding around the transfer case shift too.
