CAT GUT

Has anyone gutted out their catalytic converter to help with the exhaust flow through? Here in Washington, they only test the exhaust for opacity, not content. I've heard of this but haven't heard of the results. My 95 has over 100K and is well out of warrantee so no worries there. Any thoughts on this?

My Siamese Cat swallowed over 2 ft of wife's sewing thread. Thread ripped up 6 inches of Cat Gut. Vet had to perform emergency surgery gutted over 6 inches of her Small Cat Gut. There goes any more mods for the next few months. :'( :'(

Re:CAT GUT

OK,
Pardon the ignorance, but what's a test pipe? I am trying to ease the breathing on my '97 and I was considering gutting the cat, but I am in the military and move from state to state, where I might need to smog my vehicle in the future. Is there an inexpensive way to reduce EGT's without spending huge bucks on a turbo-back exhaust?

Re:CAT GUT

Whiff,

Its a bolt in pipe that takes the place of the cat in the stock system that the dealers use to see if the cat is supposedly clogged and causing performance problems etc.

Lots of guys use them as a short cut to a better stock exhaust system. It helps, but of course it's not nearly as helpful as a replacement system with mandrel bends and better flowing muffler etc etc.

We have played around with them and have see some help in flow and a little lower egts, hard to see on a pyro gauge but it's there. If you need any info on complete systems check us out on www.dieselperformanceparts.com or call us we'll be glad to answer any queations you might have.

Mark
DPPI

Re:CAT GUT

Bob, i see you have banks exhaust. you don't have a cat unless it's only a cat-back. i gutted mine and put a piece of pipe through it. it acts kinda of like a resonator without a piece of pipe in it. w/o pipe and with a 4" flow-through magnaplug was as quiet as stock- couldn't hear a thing. now it's mostly filled with pipe (there's only about 4" lengthwise of packing actually doing any work). getting rid of the cat and adding a flow-through is the best thing in terms of egts before going to a 4" system.

Tom

Re:CAT GUT

The Banks exhaust is from the cat back, nothing was changed up front. It is 3.5" all the way with the Banks muffler and tail pipe. The catalytic converter is still there. I believe I will get a 'test pipe' and put it in place of the cat. Stay cool. 8)
