Question Can Smarty Read DTC Codes on '98 12 Valve?

My neighbors 98 12 valve quit charging, all idiot lights are on and none of the gauges work. When the batteries died the engine quit. Put in new batteries and starts right up but no alternator charge. He put in a new alternator and still no charge. Went to advanced auto to get this verified and yup alternator not charging. Tried to read the codes with his scanner and it wouldn't connect. He said the batteries were too discharged.

My question: Can Smarty S-03 read the DTC codes on a 98 12 valve once the batteries are recharged?

Any seen this problem with a 12v before?

Thanks,

PK

Thanks for all your input. Looks like the answer to: "Can Smarty S-03 read the DTC codes on a 98 12 valve once the batteries are recharged?" is NO

It isn't clear to me that a 12v engine would have a cps... Can someone please verify that?

We finally received the part from Cummins, put it in and all is good! Thanks for the trouble shooting help.

Cummins was out of those engine speed sensors and their machine that made them was broken. They had a new machine on order, but it took over a month to get the machine up and running...
