Re:CAM DECISION TOMMORROW...HELP PLEASE

I gotta agree with Jet. He has done some WILD stuff to his truck, and I'm sure he researched ALL the possiblities, yet he ended up going with a PDR.

I would do a PDR cam. Since it's a 24v, and you most likely won't be spinning it over 3,500-4,000, then I don't think stuff that is better suited for high RPM range is necessary.

Just my .02, which I'm sure will be shot when Don~ get's on here.

Re:CAM DECISION TOMMORROW...HELP PLEASE

Depends on what you want to do. Your goals, etc.

Do you want to stomp everyone else or be like everyone else?

What are your drive pressures gonna be?

Fueling levels?

RPM range?

Drugs?

Camshafts are not an easy thing to develope. Literally hundreds of hours are needed to come up with something that works. I know of only one vendor that has done the homework to make some progress. Diesel Dynamics. I used to think it was 18 cam profile changes they did. Keith now says its up to 21. Dyno comparing them. Road testing them, etc. Many of the cam tricks that others tried did not produce the results they thought it would. Its nice having a dyno in your shop to test and compare changes.

If extreme 12 valve cams are on anyones mind...Im working toward that now. 8620 Billet steel. No prisoners stuff. Not for the faint of heart.

Re:CAM DECISION TOMMORROW...HELP PLEASE

Heck Don I don't have the answers to most of your questions...

But here is a stab at it.....

1)Stomp everyone else? I can't out spend everyone else but I want to have maximum fun with the money that I am spending...

2)Fueling Levels? Stock Vp44, delivery Valves and I gotta talk injectors soon.

3)RPM Range? I have figure out those limits NOW?????

4)Drugs? I used to smoke pot but grew up...he he
I won't rule out drugs but wanna do as much as I can without it.

So it is PDR, Enterprise, or DD?

Jet Pilot,
PDR is a strong contender so far!!!!

Re:CAM DECISION TOMMORROW...HELP PLEASE

James,
It would be nice if someone would do an engine dyno comparison of the three cams, noting spoolup, egts, boost, drive pressures, etc. but I know of none such tests. I went with Piers Cam and have been very satisfied. Cost is alway a factor in my household so it was easy to get the PDR. That said, I've not tried the rest.

Re:CAM DECISION TOMMORROW...HELP PLEASE

Larry,
I am using Titanium Retaners and Titanium and Steel Springs ??? from what I understand... Mark has a supplier for this and I don't know the source. I am sure he would be able to help you out on locating some.

Re:CAM DECISION TOMMORROW...HELP PLEASE

If you buy the pdr cam do you need to change the retainers and spring?

To my knowledge... NO It was just something we decided to do since we were doing all the other head work and the twins.
