Budget Puller

Well, looks like I'll be picking up a new project . Getting a '96 extended cab longbed 4x4 2500 (913 pump). 5-speed already has the upgraded input shaft and dual disk clutch.
Aiming to build a puller on a budget (doesn't need to be street driveable), and just curious what ideas you guys might have. Right now, I'm thinking:

Weld up the front and rear diffs
Gauges
Laser-cut DV's
4k gsk
370's
Hot plate for the pump
Big single, HT3B/HX55/B2 size
O-rings and studs
Light dremel porting on the head when I pull it
Traction bars
Cheap intake and straight exhaust
Street puller type cam (big as I can go without cutting pistons)

Any advice or other ideas to build power cheap? Know a place to get cheap turbos? (Seen 3B's rebuilt for $250-300 on ebay lately - not bad at all).
Thanks!
Chris

crank the timing way up, grind the plate down far as possible, your gonna need valve springs with a 4gsk, dont use an intake and route the exhaust through the hood, don't see a need for gauges if this is a pulling truck maybe a boost gauge,

I got a good when I read puller on a budget. That sounds like a good start but you are going to want alot more fuel and rpm than that.

Why exhaust?
Go straight through the hood

A 215 Pump with a Zero style plate, 370 Injectors, and Laser Cuts is a WHOLE LOTTA FUEL!

Just to clarify, I'm not expecting to run Mod class on a budget. Super street should be fairly doable, though, right? I'm actually a little afraid that the pump will put out too much fuel for a HT3B-sized turbo.
Anybody know if there is an rpm limit on the super street class? I should be able to get 4500 out of this, between the 4k kit and exhaust springs - is that over the allowable limit?
Thanks for all the responses, guys - keep 'em coming.

If I were you I'd build it to run in the street legal class. I don't know about your region, but up here there are lots of guys that should be running modified or open, but because they have bumpers on they run in street legal... at least that's the way it seems. If you are going to run street legal, run the exhaust behind the cab. I don't know what the weight classes are out there but you should be able to sneak into a street legal. just my .02

Hey Beanpole what's a good large single to run from an application like this? Something that definately isn't streetable, but will really shine on the pulling track. It has to be under the 2.8" inducer limit. You in all your wealth of knowledge should have some insight.

4LO my advice, gut the cab except for the drivers seat run 4" off the turbo back into the right front corner of the bed to a single stack.

Do the 370's/#0/Laser Cut DV's (I think JR Adkins is the cheapest $250) and that should be plenty of fuel. Look for beanpole to comment back on a charger. 4K GSK's will get you 4400-4500 RPM, at least that's what my truck turns when I'm launching.

Get a GOOD set of traction bars from someone like Greg Long www.greatlakesdieselworks.com and get at least a set of 305 size tires. I would recommend BFG AT's if its in the budget. A pro street class buddy of mine has had a lot of luck with Bridgestone Dueler A/T's this year though.
Like its said above you will probably still get a run for your money at the bigger street class truck pulls, but at some of the smaller brush pulls you will probably do extremely well.

Thanks, guys - it's got 315 Coursers on it now, about half worn though. Any recommendations on what brand tire to go with?
JR has a charger that sounds like it would be perfect for me - I'd just need to bush it down to 2.8. Problem is price - I'm looking for something under $800, which is hard to do for this size. I've been thinking of picking up a B2 and then dropping it off with JR to see what he can do about spoolup on it.
Is water injection allowed in super street classes?
Anybody know what a 2500 extended cab longbed 4x4 weighs stock?
Thanks again.

I've heard different views on grinding the plate yourself - do you need to harden it again after grinding or no? Thanks.

That's Mitch's truck! Yeah he just put a SBC Input Shaft and Kenny Machine Dual Disk. Not even one pull on the clutch just a very little bit of daily driving! I can tell you one thing he has really taken care of that truck as long as I have known him. You got a good deal on a truck from a good guy.

Those 315's have 1/2 tread left supposedly (Mitch was going to keep them and sell them to me! ) so I'd stick with them for now. A lot guys are running Courser C/T's in KY and having really good luck with them. Jacob Bradford and Chris Cracraft come to mind. They usually place in the top 5 every time. With 4.10 gears in that truck you should be able to spin them fairly well.

My truck 2500 Club Cab Long Bed 4x4 with 315 tires DD clutch 3/4 tank of fuel and 300 lbs of IH in the floorboard weighed in at just under 7500lbs if I remember correctly.
