Boost Fooling

Hello everyone! Long time since I started a thread...

My truck has been very doggy lately when towing, with low mileage and low speed. I watch the boost go way up, and my EGT's get to the end of "green" on my guage, and then I am sure I feel the motor defuel -- the pedal is all the way to the floor, but the engine stays at max. boost and slows down. I assume my wastegate is stuck in the closed position, causing my high boost condition and the corresponding code. The check engine light has never come on. My reason for posting in this forum, is that if my wastegate is actually stuck closed, isn't that a good thing? I can easily get a boost fooler and wind my engine up for more power, since I am defueling now? I read about people j-hooking the wastegate closed when adding an EZ or the like, right? Do I necessarily need a fueling box for more power, or will the boost fooler allow me to keep going with my stock setup and the wastegate closed?
I watch my EGT's pretty close, but haven't had to lately -- I can't make the truck leave the green!!

Running empty, I do not notice anything different. Load a modest trailer and I feel like I am driving my old Chevy K-10 w/350 smallblock. I used to tow like my 8.0 V-10, but with much better mileage, and I want it back that way.

I still think you need a fueling box for more power. The boost fooler will help a little, but I doubt it will be very noticeable with stock fueling. If you get a Comp, you be happy, as you will have boost fooling and more fuel all at once. Just mt $0.02 Hope this helps. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I don't know if I will get more power, but I at least want to be to move with traffic again. I am lucky to keep 60 mph when it starts to defuel in the hills! I used to be able to run 70+ with the rest of traffic on good roads, and still get 12 mpg! Now I get around 8 mpg and stay camped out in the slow lane. I haven't had any dead pedal and no unusual smoke, but I did find a 0216 code for my VP. I am saving for a new VP, so I can't afford to throw a Comp onit yet, and my tranny will be toast if I do! Like I said, the truck runs fine empty, but has become terrible under load.

It sounds to me like your VP is going south since you have the 0216 "death code". How much fuel pressure do you have? The VP shouldn't defuel until around 2700 or so. I don't remember exactly. Whenever you can, I would throw a new VP on it and I bet you'll be fine again. Good luck, and keep us posted on what happens.

Might check and see if your wastegate actuator is leaking. Sounds like mine before I r&r it. If you can get boost under ecm limit ou should regain power lost by defueling.
