Boost elbow

What is this boost elbow everyone talks about? I saw something on a website last night, they say it's a boost elbow. Looks like a little brass 90deg elbow, threaded on both ends. What does it do?

SO if I'm understanding this right, I can't use the boost elbow on my truck as that I have the auto tranny and stock turbo? I'm looking into getting a j-hook and boost fooler from bd. Wondering if I should do the elbow or not. I'm only getting about 19psi of boost now.

It won't work on the HY35, as it has a hard line from the compressor to the wastegate actuator. J-hook or turnbuckle is your best options for the HY.

Can I expect much of a performance gain from the boost fooler and j hook?

Only if you have the fuel to warrant it. Seeing as you have a programmer on your truck, chances are you won't need a boost fooler for it.

Why not get a box instead? Smarty is still only 65ish hp, Adrenaline and Comp boxes are double that. Get them cheaper than a smarty as well.

Tate, what exactly do those boxes do? And do they have a boost fooling program? I'm assuming they tap ino the vp under the hood?

Yea, they tap the pump wire, taking some of the control away from the ECM. Yes, they do boost fooling. Check out the Edge and Quadzilla site for more details.

You should verify that you actually have a hy35. I *think* your 01 auto should have a hx35, so the boost elbow will work.

It'll say right on the tag on the compressor housing. And you should be able to see the threads on the stock fitting going into the housing if it's a hx35.

Oh, and I just read that link. I think that guy is mistaken. Technically the hx will develop more pressure/boost, but it is not capable of delivering more flow over 35psi due to adiabatic (compression) heating. Around 35psi the pressure creates enough heat to resist making the air more dense and simply makes it hotter and higher pressure as "Choke point" in the exhaust housing hurts flow since the wastegate won't be letting excessive drive pressure vent.

And that's with a good aftercooler of course, which the stocker is supposed to be pretty decent. Otherwise the number would be more like 15psi topps.

In short, the point of diminishing returns.

Your 2001 came factory with the HY so unless it's been changed after the fact that is what it will have.

As far as hp increase with J-hook, that depends, is the truck making any smoke? If yes, then by increasing boost, more fuel will be burnt and more hp made. The Hy can go as high as 32psi but it will make so much heat it's not really doing much good, so a real world max of 28 or 29psi is good.

The good thing about the J-hook is it will greatly reduce egt's so you can add more fuel without exceeding max egt's of 1250f.
