On Board Air System

I have been wanting to do this for awhile, and the other day my wife's grandad gave me a nice grover air horn that he got from a boneyard. I have tried it out, and it sounds great. So this has kinda light a fire in me to get this project going.

I am wanting to know about compressors, relays, pressure swithes, and the likes. Where did you get yours, and how did you hook it all up? I am planning on building my own air tank, so that wont be a concern. I would like for it to be strong enough to run my air horn, and fill up a tire if I need to.

I have searched this topic, and found a little bit of info, but not what I was really looking for.

PK,
Go to this link: Tech Mods

The first 7 links discuss airhorns/compressors etc.

back in 2000 my uncle pulled the PTO box that bolts to the side of my nv4500 and i ran an air compressor off it with a pair of like 20# tanks under my old truck that we use to fix tractors and stuff out in the field or on the side of the road. sold that truck and PTO stuff when i left for the army though but that worked great

Viair compressors seem to be popular.
I have a Viair 450C that I have had for 2-3 years in my garage, I need to get a fire lit under me to install it

I went with an extreme outback extremeair compressor. It has done all that I have asked from it for several years now. They have since added the magnum which looks to be pretty nice though more expensive. They had all the parts as well. The website also has some schematics of how to wire and plumb it up. There a couple links below from their website. If your horn didnt come with one you will still need some type of valve/solenoid. I picked mine up from Rickson Truck and wired it in with a switch/relay to the stock horn. So I can have both stock and air horn going or just the stock horn. I also plumbed a line with a quick connect up to the front bumper so I can just hook up my hose for easy access. I put it up front as I used a common line for it and the air horn and just branched it off up front. However one in the rear would actually be a more user friendly space. I had to buy a long hose to reach my trailer tires, whereas one in the rear a 25 foot hose would reach everything. I am getting ready to add a second tank and will plumb one back there at that time.

I kept the horn valve and horn from a big truck. Then I hooked up a power door lock from a junk car to the air valve and wired it to the stock horn.

Mine has a ViAir set-up. About a year on it, so far so good.

My system is similar to this (and is 6 years old so I am replacing it with the same):
Firestone 9210 35% duty cycle HD compressor, $177
90100 90psi on/120psi off pressure switch, $25
Northern Tools 5 Gallon air tank (with pressure gauge!), $20
Lowes air hose, $10
Various fittings (quick connects, junctions, switch, etc.) $30
I think the air horn valve is a Wolo, but I'm not sure.

I mounted the tank under the right rear fender on the bed frame. Compressor goes right there, too. I run the 3/8" hose to the horn in the front and also have a quick disconnect hanging from the tank to air up tires, etc.

BarryG-- killer links. Thanks for posting.

The "portable" Magnum looks like a great deal, because I don't plan on air horns and I'd prefer to only have the A/C when I needed it.
