im workin on a truck for a buddy here. it blew the stock turbo about a month ago. we put my stock one on and he got about 100 miles before that one blew too. what could be taking them out? oil feed line isnt restricted and drain tube isnnt either. we got a hx35 hybrid to put on but gotta find the problem first. any ideas?

Could it be they were the counterfeit Chinese turbos labeled Holset and sold for cheap on places like ebay?

What specifically went wrong with the turbos? Lock up, become excessively loose, did the wheels actual scatter? Knowing that will help diagnose your issue.

Is your buddy barking the turbos? letting off them real quick under heavy acceleration and causing them to bark? That will damage a turbo in a hurry.

Be sure your not runnin a Fram or other cheap knockoff oil filter. Turbos hate small paper particles too!

If its loose axially, turbo barking/surging would be the likely cause. Radial play would probably be due to bad oil condition or supply.

How loose is loose? Can you measure the play?

its up and down play. looking into it last night, the oil was low. there was only like 6 litres in it. thinkin that was the cause. it wouldnt surprise me if hes barking it. my new turbo barks every time i shift if im driving it any bit harder than normal.

Oil supply is the key to keeping your turbo alive longer. Cheap oil, low oil, pinched lines all can cause them to die fast. There is damage to the engine too, but the turbo is more sensitive.

Barking is bad, mine does it more too, but I have been working on the fueling settings to help keep that to a minimum. I am just starting on the journey of a turbo overhaul.

That would be radial play. Are the wheels touching the housings?

Side to side play is ok as long as the wheel doesn't hit the housing.
Back and forth play is a no-no.

Put the new turbo on' fired it up and pulled the drain tube off the turbo and there's lots of oil coming out the bottom. I'm thinkin low oil was his problem. Took it for a short drive last night, seems to be workin fine.
