Blocking the wastegate

I posted a few weeks ago about not installing the elbow with my plate, had some suggest blocking the wastegate.
Figre Ill give it a try and run like that for a week or so.
What exactly am I looking for?

Do I block somthing on the pump side, the turbo side? where and how?

i block most of the waste gates on trucks i work on. but it all depends what you have done to the motor. if it is all stock leave it alone, 370 injectors and a zero plate with a stock 12 housing it better be working. fill out your sig and we should be able to give you a idea on what works.

do you have gauges? i would block it if all you have is a #10 plate. but if boost is hiting over 38 or so i would suggest getting the wastegate workin.

I dont currently have any guages.
I have not tinkered with the turbo at all, Should blocking it cause that much of a spike in pressure?
I dont do too much beating on the truck, other than the occasional tire blazing burnouts.

Another Triangle Ram... nice!

With a #10, you really need a pyro gauge, pronto. 5-speed or auto?

I've got a white '98 with a Ranch-hand style bumper... only one in the area... gimme a wave if ya see me!

I have got the auto. I have not had any problems with it as of yet, 6 plow seasons with aggressive maintainence and no issues.

Just disconnect it at the AFC housing and plug both ends, plugging the end that goes to the trubo is just to keep dirt out. The fitting on the AFC housing should be plugged good to prevent an air leak.

34-36 psi is max turbo speed depending on your altitude, if you're high in elevation, then less. You will need a pyro/boost to effectively tune this thing and to make sure you're out of the danger zone with EGT's and/or turbo overspeed.

Follow the hose from the wategate head.........it will either go straight to the turbo outlet (only 10 inches away) or it will be a hard line and go across the engine to the back of the AFC housing (on top of inj pump) you can block it or install an aftermarket elbow or DIY boost controller at either end.

Happy bombing.

I talked to Piers recently about getting a boost elbow. His recommendation was to block the wastegate as long as you are not flowing substantially more fuel than stock. Just keep an eye on the boost gauge and pyro and be sane about letting both get too high for too long.

Since my truck is stock with the timing bumped a little I figure I can control my foot enough to get by with the wastegate blocked for now. As soon as the trans dies and a properly built replacement goes back in I may have to rethink the combination....

For the Raleigh area guys - I travel 64 from Knightdale out to RTP and back everyday. Look for a red 2WD regular cab with a hard tonneau cover in the left hand lane.........

I'm a 24V guy, but I recently installed a needle valve on my WG so I could "tweak" the WG setting. With the boost elbow that came with my EZ, I could hit 31 psi max. The needle valve gives me anything from full WG actuation to a blocked WG.

It's interesting to take aclose look at the "boost elbow". Not only is there a small bleed orifice on the side, the hole INSIDE that allows air to the WG actuator is very small. So in order for me to use the boost elbow with my needle valve, I had to drill it out on the inside to allow airflow to hit the WG. I also had to seal the small bleed orifice. I soldered mine closed, as it was brass and even electrical solder worked just fine.

At MY level of fueling, full WG actuation gives me about 25psi max.

Blocking the WG takes me up to about 33-34 psi max.

There didn't seem to be ANY performance difference, but EGT behavior was a little different. I noticed that with the WG blocked, EGT came up a lot slower, and would stop at 1200 or so (it was cold outside). Letting the WG open caused EGT to come up faster and a hair farther. I could kiss 1300 with the WG wide open.

The difference in MY usage was really academic, as I was exceeding legal speeds (75mph) before I hit dangerous EGTs in EITHER case.

For now, I'm blocking the WG and leaving it that way because the AVERAGE egt is lower. That means I'm getting better efficiency out of the engine, as more energy is converted to power.

how do ya'll block the wastegate? i have heard that it can blow open with just the spring holding it. i havn't got my truck reunning yet, but i put a short 1/4 inch bolt in there with a nut and adjusted the nut till it holds the wastegate closed TIGHT. the only way that thing is gunna come open is to melt the turbo or something. i'll let ya'll know what i run for pressure when i get it running.

I just used a 1/8" NPT plug to block mine.

Juicegrips work well

BTW to got....Diesel. PSIG is not constant to turbo speed.

You can kill a turbo by overspeeding without being over boosted. I have real world experience in that department.
