BHAF: Making a Metal Guard for inside of filter

When my BHAF wears out, I though about taking the metal protective surrounding off the outside, and fabing it up to fit on the inside of the new filter to prevent the media from going inot the turbo....

this is just a brainstorm. Has anyone actually done this?

I think it would be easier and more effective to buy the marine version of the BHAF, it has mesh inside and out.

It may be easier, but if I remember correctly, the marine filter doesn't have the airflow volume that the non-marine does.

I remember reading something about this awhile back. I thought that the marine version flowed better than the automotive version. I do know that it will stand up to water better because it is made out of a different material. The only only draw back is the price. I think it was between 100 and 120 dollars.

I was planning on getting the Marine version when I got mine.

More resistant to moisture, metal mesh inside and out, but they were out of stock.
In fact, I took the last regular BHAF they had.

Come replacement time, I'll order ahead to make sure they have the Marine version for me.

Back to the topic, I don't see how it could hurt anything to fab up some mesh for the inside.
As long as everything is tight, so you don't run the risk of the mesh coming loose and rubbing or cutting up the inside of the filter.

Did someone have a BHAF come apart and cause turbo damage?

I've heard that if they get wet they start to come apart.

One guy, on this board I think, put a plastic bag over his when he was washing the engine, and forgot to remove said bag when he started it up and it got sucked down pretty close to the turbo, but I don't think it caused any damage.

What I've seen happen

Back a few years ago, before there was a marine version of the BHAF, the automotive version was used in marine applications. I went to troubleshoot a 250 HP marine engine. It had a BHAF, as they all did back then. The filter had goten wet, and the paper had deteriorated to the point it ws sucked thru the turbo. It didn't hurt the turbo at all. This 250 HP marine had a fresh water cooled aftercooler on it. The filter paper had plugged the aftercooler until the engine wouldn't run above an idle. I don't think paper pulp will hurt a turbo, but it might plug your aftercooler, and it will certainly make a nasty mess.
