Best Recipe!

Hi

I am new to the cummins world but have been around diesels for a while. I have been doing some reading and know the basic mods and such. I aquired a 96 2wd cummins with the NV4500 tranny that had been wrecked for 1100.00 and plan on putting the engine and tranny in my 94 Chevrolet C3500. The engine has about 220,000miles on it but still runs great. I am eventually going to put a straight axle front end under the truck and make it a sled puller. I don't really care much for dragracing, would rather pull a sled or play on a dyno. What I want to know is what is the best combo for me? I want a truck that can still be driven daily, gets decent milage as long as my foot doesn't meet the carpet too much, but yet can pull good in the street class. I don't want twins right now but will upgrade the single to a better one. I don't want to go into the engine yet such as pistons and such so that pretty much eliminates the cam. So what I am looking for is getting as close as I can to 500hp without a cam or diff pistons and can still be driven with minimal black smoke when easy on the throttle and decent milage. I also don't know many cummins sites so where is a good place to buy the stuff yall are suggesting?

Thanks for any help, John

If you are looking for a place to buy parts, look at the links tab at the top. There are many good vendors that will tell you all you need to know about upgrades, or you good just do some searching and find out for yourself.

The only two places that I have found that have a good bit of 12valve parts listed has been Mass Diesel, And ats turbos. I talked briefly with Scott at Mass Diesel and he is who hooked me up with the guy that is going to do the conversion for me. He gave me some good suggestions but took it a little further than I wanted to go money wise. The web sites that I have found don't describe too well what the parts do for you. That is why I am trying to get some opinion on things then I will havea better idea of what to look for on the websites!

For 12V power, call Piers Diesel Research. I don't think anyone has demonstrated more 12V knowledge and capability than PDR.

Oh, and for a 96 manual tranny truck , it should be 180hp, right?

I'd do a #10 plate, 3K gsk, 181 DVs, and Bosch 300 injectors. That's a great, smooth, driveable combo that's capable of real good power.

But what do I know-- I'm a 24V guy.

Ok after looking at piers I have started seeing the light! lol I was looking at the plate, gsk, the 370 injectors, Super High Flow Dilevery valve kit, the smaller head stud kit, and o-ring cylinder head for starters. Does that sound pretty good? What kind of numbers can I look for with that setup? Then after I bounce back from that expense I was thinking of the KSB-1 bomber turbo.

That turbo is too small for that much fuel.

I think the super-hi-flow DVs are lasercut. BIG FUEL.

With those and 370s, you will have over 500hp worth of fuel. a KSb-1 is out of its league.

You'll need something bigger, more like a Phat Shaft 66 or Sledpuller 66 turbo.

12V work better with twins. Most large single chargers will bark and surge and give you fits on a 12V because the head doesn't move enough air. A cam and port job would fix this.

The reason I don't want twins is so I can stay in the lower class of pulling. Is there a cam out that I don't have to change pistons for? Where can I find those turbos at?

For any mild street cam and probably many others, the pistons are fine. Your 96 5 spd motor should have the big 215 pump. With a #10, 370's, and big delivery valves, and the right turbo to handle it, it should well have 500hp. Your pump with ONLY a #10 plate is rated to put 330hp/750tq to the wheels Turbos are something im still not that knowledgable about. Just figure out what other people with that combo are running, and see what they think. You will HAVE TO have a bigger turbo with all that fuel pretty quick. The stocker will be WAY to small for that much fuel, and you wont be able to drive it hard at all because of EGT's. PM member Got Smoke? on here. He has a JR Adkins 55 turbo for sale for a decent price, with low miles on it, and has close to the same mods you are considering i believe. He could tell you what he thinks of that turbo, and how that combo is working for him. He put out 428hp at the last dyno day here in Ky with it. Good Luck

Eric

Cool so basically I am on the right track to a good daily driver that is capable of the 500hp mark? I was on Piers last night and saw their Lightning 20100 turbo, would this be a good one? Thanks for the help fellas!

Never heard of this turbo. Where did you see it on Piers' site? COuld you post a link?

If it's the KSb1B lightning, then the turbo is too small for your power level. A KSb1b lightning is only good to about 425hp with controlled EGT. After that, you need a large external gate.
