Best primary turbo for a....

small really small twins setup. Something smaller than an ht3b or hx60. Goal is more to keep it cool when working it loaded. Just small enough to sufficiently cool. Got enough power just trying to keep egt's down. Anyone out there running such a setup? Not interested who's got the biggest primary and every compound has to be this big, want to hear from those running a smaller than ht3b primary succesfully.

There have been a number of people who have used an Hx55 as a primary turbo in their twins. They work well, but have a tendency to run out of air around 2400 rpm.. The reason for using a smaller turbo on the bottom is to spool up faster. I really like the BW K31 as a primary. It spools faster than a 3b or larger S400. With a stock (HX35) turbo on top it is outstanding as a towing setup. It also has a wastegated housing so you can keep your overall boost down to avoid head gasket issues. They run in the $900 dollar range new. Very durable, titanium compressor wheel. It is my favorite so far.

That would be a good turbo...and take Ron's word, he's tried almost all of them.

Joefarmer built a set of chargers from and HX35/40 and a small S400 (64mm Inducer/1.10 A/R Exhaust housing) Spools lightning fast!

City Diesel in Decatur Alabama sells them. Jason is the guy to talk to. Great place. They bolt up the same as an S400. But the wastegated housing is longer. This moves the downpipe farther rearward. I already had a downpipe I was trying to work around, so I ended up moving it forward a bit and putting an odd dog leg in my hotpipe. It works fine but took a while. Source Automotive could probably sell you the stuff for putting it together. The K31 is a really good turbo designed for a 500hp truck motor.

I don't know about use on a 5.9, but according to the bw website they have a 1 year, 100k mile warranty. I guess they must figure they will hold up.

Do you have a b/w or any part number for the one you bought? Any and all #'s would be great!

Does anyone know what kind of horsepower a stock HX35 and K31 combo could support? And also does anyone know the specifics on the set joefarmer made? Such as top turbo housing size, mods to the housing, and model/part numbers for the S400 and where he got it?

Somewhere in the range of ~500 HP towing, 600+ competition? The hx35 has a 12cm ex housing, drilled divider, opened wastegate to .100" smaller than the flapper. The s400 came from ebay. It's a 64mm charger and I don't have the part number for it. Here's pictures:
