Best Chip For Towing?

As you can see I currently have a Van Aakan chip. I tow a 28ft fifthwheel. I'm happy with the set up, but I would like some more power when I'm not towing. I've been reading past posting on different chips and can't make up my mind. Another problem, I'm in CA!!! I wanted to put in some mild injectors, but now the truck has to be smogged every two years and a chip is easier to remove. I've looked at Smarty, but it says, shouldn't be used for towing heavy loads. I was thinking may the Edge EZ or Quad XZT+. Is anyone using the XZT+ for towing and how to you like it? What about the EZ? After reading about the Smarty, it scares me to tow with it. Thanks for nay information you can give me.

No reason you can't use the Smarty for towing. There are certain settings you want to avoid while towing (i.e. fuel mileage setting), but it works perfectly fine while towing.

All of the boxes you mentioned max out around 65hp, each just has it's own curve in how it gets there. If you really want more power while not towing, you should look into getting a wire tap box, which you can then turn down while towing if you need to control the fuel.

All things in moderation sir! You could install the most agressive programmer on your truck and still tow with it....you just wouldn't want to run any "agressive" programmer on the highest level when towing. Yes, both the Edge EZ and Quad XZT+ are good boxes to use for towing as they both add roughly 65hp. I had the XZT+ and even w/the 3k tune it performed very well when towing. The Adrenaline also works well for my needs when towing but I don't run it on the highest setting either and watch my gauges when I do tow. Hope this helps.

I'd say forget the EZ and XZT+ as they do give 65 hp which is fine for towing, they provide no protection features, with Edge J/a or Adr, you can set safeguards so that even if your foot is too the floor it will defuel and keep everything within acceptable levels, this allows you to drive watching the road and NOT staring at your mechanical gauges every second your driving.

cost wise its cheaper for a J/A than an EZ plus gauges

I use a smarty and mach 1.6 injectors and love the power for towing heavy stuff and 1.6s will not smoke with the smarty on half power

I have rv injectors and the edge ez and do watch the gauges, my boy has the edge ez and the smarty and we just put in the rv injectors. I do have a DDT trans and my boy has the input output shaft and valvebody/torque converter. all is well on mine. He seems to run egt up faster ED

Thank you all for your advice. Being in CA i'm limited on what I can do. I thinking of the Edge Juice, because I can remove it to get smogged. I would like injectors, but I'm not mechanical enough, nor do I want to remove them every two years to get the truck smogged. I have three or four more years of work, then I will retire and move north.

Another option you can consider is that the Smarty has a 1/2 power setting that can be used for your smog test. Combine that with a set of smaller injectors and you should still be able to pass.

No experience trying it before as we don't have emissions testing on diesels, but I have been in a truck set on 1/2 power and it was pretty gutless.
