Still not sure what turbo I want to run. I was looking at a PS62 on ebay but I passed on it for the moment. I'm looking for fairly quick spool (I tow alot), and need to keep a TST/Smarty, and Mach 1.75's cool. I might plan on going to bigger injectors as well so I want to factor that in also. I have heard some about the new Ball-bearing turbos like the Edge and Garrett, but dont know a whole lot about them. Are many people running them yet? Who is a good dealer for these? Also, do they really sound as bad as the ones on the 6.0's? I hope so!
That GT37R Garrett looks like an excellent turbo, in the Stage II setup. Hardly anyone running them on here for some reason.
$1700 or so doesn't seem bad for a double ball bearing, liquid cooled center section Garrett. The old school thrust bearing turbos are $1400-1500.
The few that have them say they spool extemely fast(very close to stock). They sound awesome, that is for sure.
This is what I would like to upgrade to eventually. I have the Juice and Mach 1.6s. Could use a little more cooling, especially towing.

From what I've heard, the Edge is geard more for a stock replacement, than a High-performance replacement! 425hp is tops for it
I need to call Garrett and ask them about their chargers...I want to use one as a top charger, but I'm not sure if it can hold up to the loads. That would be an expensive experiment

don't you have a gt42 of some sort Chris??? & hey it's only $$$ right??? that being said we nominate you to do the expiramenting!!! LOL let us know if you find any good info., about all I've gotten is that the ball bearing lineup doesn't have a rebuildable cartridge so you should buy a phat shaft or sp series, I know they're tried & true turbo's & a great product, but i like to be a little different, & try new stuff, not to mention the sound of those Garrett's is AWESOME!! if they perform as well as they sound they'd be great!!!! I'm not 100% sure how the oil/water combo works on the cartidge??? I know they utilize both oil & water both, just not sure exactly how it works, they're supposed to spool like no other, but can't say from experience how well they work (yet!!!!!

Yep, most Ball bearing chargers use oil and water cooling...why, don't know exactly, but it can't hurt. The Duramaxes use water cooled chargers from the factory, and you've seen how tough they are. Anyway to keep more heat out of the charger can't hurt durability!
From what I can tell from my GT45R, the oil comes in from the top like normal, with the water coming in on the sides. I'm guessing the water flows straight through, just cooling the housing itself, not actually touching the bearings. The bearings are in oil AFAIK!
The biggest advantage of BB chargers is fast spool...with ball bearings, there is less friction over a typical bushing type bearing, ie. surface area. Spools faster, allowing you to run bigger wheels/chargers on the same engine...this is what I'm going for. I want to make this charger bigger than a B2/S400, but spool better. Garrett has many housings available for their turbos...for mine, down to a 1.01A/R. For comparison, a B2 is a 1.32A/R. Faster spool
There is a tradeoff to faster spool though...choke. Just like a factory charger at ~35psi+, the smaller housing will choke at higher RPM levels...external wastegating required, but it's worth it!

like Chris said the spool vs. "choking point" on the turbo is all I can see that might hurt ya, but if you tuned that "choke" just right with all the housings to choose from, could you possibly (in a twin setup) use that to the advantage of ur stock headbolts & gaskets, I'd love for someone to build a set of twins that spooled awesome down low, but died early enough to stay in the 40-50psi. range, seems that wastegates just don't get this done by themselves, or would a setup along these lines just basically be worthless, I know on a racetrack/dyno situation they would be of no benefit, but for the few of us that actually take these trucks & work them day in & day out could it be a good thing, if we all had magical headgaskets like Chris we wouldn't have to worry about high boost pressures!!!!!LOL, but I'd like to have enough air to run a bigger injector w/out worrying about getting hours from the house & my HG pop & leave me & the truck & my load stranded, & w/out studs & orings or firerings & such, twins just don't seem like a good idea?????? it'd just be awesome to be able to run twins w/out all the extra headache & expense that it takes to run most twin kits w/out HG problems, ok I'm done now!!! That is where running bigger external wastegates come in.
A stock HX35 has a 21mm wastegate hole (approx), that bleeds off 3 cylinders. You can drill it out to waste all 6, but you can't "normally" get more than say, 25mm hole. External gates offer anywhere from 38mm to 50mm of "capacity" for lack of a better term. These gates can limit boost/drive pressure as low as you want, up to ~600hp...the only reason for the 600hp limit, is I haven't heard of anyone over this using them on both chargers...yet

The stock wastegates are fine for most people. but if you're looking for max tuning capabilities, dual exterals are for you...they are easier to use/adjust, and do a better job. The only downside is time and fabrication! Cost is not a factor, because you can run cheaper non-w/g housings

Its interesting the water cooling is mainly for heat soak after the truck is shut off.
