Garrett Ball Bearing Turbo Question

Been doing a lot of reading about these turbos and it sounds like something I might be doing. It seems like the 2 turbos Id be looking at is the stage 3 3788r w/ the .99 a/r or the 4088r w/ a .85 or .95 a/r. From what Im reading though the 4088r only comes with a t4 not a t3? Also from what Im reading to some people send their turbo to Tom at Turbo Resource, but I havent gathered what he does, anybody know (does he make it flow more or what)? Eventually Ill throw a 4202r or a 4508r under it. So what do you think would be a better turbo for 90-120hp stix's?

And where the best/cheapest place to find them? Ive gathered roughly what the stage 3 cost, but I have zero clue what the 4088r cost, anybody know?

I just got my stg 3 3788 back from Tom at Turbo Resource on Tuesday. I won't be able to put it on for a few weeks so I don't have any driving impressions. If you're going to be buying one, he's got a great price and he modifies the exhaust housing for faster spool. He's a great guy to work with and you can't go wrong.

Identify what your goals are first and go from there. First, don't get too hung up on what you see on the Garrett website... you actually have more options. For instance, you can get a .89 a/r with the stage 3. The 4088 and 3788 flow the same 80 lbs/min, but have much different spool characteristics. Which you would choose depends on the application. The 4088 EH's are not wastegated. Don't worry about the t-3 t-4 stuff either... that can be overcome.

If you go with 120hp stix, you would use the 4508r. If 90hp, the 4202r will work. There is quite a price difference in the two as well.

My first BB set was basically a 3788 stage 3 over a custom 4208 and did the 708hp in my sig and spooled faster than BD tow twins or stock HE351.

I'll send a PM on sourcing and pricing... disclaimer: I do not sell or make any money off these things!!!! Simply providing info!

You should, as this is the beginning of what i'm sure will be a run on BB Turbos based upon finally getting some info on their usage on 3rd gens....i would have looked into buying one if i'd seen any of this stuff a month or so ago.

Well, the info was out there, you have to know where to find it... but there really isn't a wealth of experience so far. Add to that a lot of misinformation too. It is common for new things to take a while to pan out.

Whats the difference in spool between the 3788 and 4088 Im guessing the 3788 spools faster? If this is so why even go with the 4088, b/c Im guessing its more expensive?

And if you dont mind sharing what size injectors did you have to make 708hp?

Last have you dyno'd your new set?

The 3788 spools faster due to a smaller turbine wheel/smaller frame. The 4088 has a little bigger snail on the compressor. 3788 is really aggressive on spool, (its got really light wheels) and a tad more sensitive to surge as a result. The 4088 in contrast is more smooth and even...also the 4088, from the factory, uses non-wastegated t-4 EH's.

I used Flux 3's with my old set... I have not dyno'd the new set yet.
