Garrett Ball Bearing Turbos
Garrett Ball Bearing Turbos
Need some feedback guys......I have a buddy that owes me some cash and can't pay, but he's got a few of these turbos....stage 2's? Brand new w/kit Looked at some info and they look legit, but I want to hear what you guys have to say...

I've been looking at them. I was told by numerous people to purchase the turbo from Turbo Resource because they make changes to them to eliminate some of the shortcomings of the Garrett design. Such as larger turbine outlet, and some others I can't remember at this hour.
EGT's are supposedly a couple hundred degrees cooler after Turbo Resource makes their changes. And they mount a different flange on it as well (instead of adapter)
You can send the turbo to them and have it modded for a very moderate price though. The stage 3 recently made 520+ with no surging and very low egts.

I'm running the stage 2 and very happy with it. It spools sooner than the stock turbo, with my stick it made a huge difference for daily driving and towing. It will support 450hp but if your planning on more i would look into the stage 3.
Does the stage 3 require a lot more fueling? i read part of the thread with Olywrench and he said it surged and basically blamed it on lack of fueling.
i blamed it on fueling based on what i was told and then tried myself, what i was told later was that to over come the garrett stage 3 shortcomings without messing with the turbo was that an intercooler and cam was needed.
I now think my fuel was adequate,i beleive later in the thread or in another that i also had surging with another turbo.

I was told by Tom at Turbo Resource the same as 0ly was... The testing they did all had an aftermarket cam and intercooler on a dudes truck from TDR for an article they were doing.
0ly, I am back in town and I really wanna scope out those twins. Spent the whole week in Moses Lake, but itchin to see em! I'll call you Monday and see if we can get together at some point!

That said, Olywrench did have some issues with his that did not seem to get resolved to his satisfaction. But I have to reject the idea that "it was because of not enough fueling". That is a very sensitive turbo that has a very wide operating range. By that I mean it can handle a wide range of pressure ratios-- low fueling to high fueling. As a single, it is that sensitivity that is both a blessing and curse... at very low throttle input, there is a little surge as the wheel is so free spinning it will tend to want to keep going after you let off the throttle and what I would call "overspinning" the throttle input. Again, I've only noticed this when at low rpm, low load, light throttle conditions... give a little more pedal and voila! This can actually be seen on the compressor map but can be cured with a ported housing.
We are lucky to have such a wide range of products that we can custom tailor our needs to. One given product in any application, turbo, electronics or otherwise will not be successful in all applications. So what didn't work for one person may be the perfect solution for another. I think the notion that an intercooler is needed to help with turbo surging in just asinine. A cam may do something, but really how much? And the idea that you would market a turbo and then say you need a cam and CAC to make it work right... that doesn't wash at all. Garrett certainly has no disclaimer to suggest you need that to run their turbo.
