bad engine problems

WE recently installed a new timing cover because of the K.D.P, and it cracked the housing. we got everything done and went to take it for a ride and it sputters and blows a serious amount of white smoke. we cracked the fuel lines and double checked everything. its a 97 2500 12 valve diesel. towards the end of tonight it wanted to blow a little black smoke but it remaind for the most part white. any help is appreciated thanks

Sounds to me like the injection pump timing slipped while putting the gear back on the pump. It's pretty common, sometimes you can fool around for hours trying to get it exactly where you want it, it's easy for it to slip while you are tightening the nut.

This is the procedure for correcting the problem. I as well believe that the timing slipped, it really isn't too hard to do BUT will be time consuming. On the two trucks I have done it took several tries to get the pump to stay where I wanted when popping the gear off the shaft. What helped a bunch is overshoot your desired lift by quite a bit and then rotate it the other way to go back down to where you want it, work a bunch better for me doing it this way!
