Back pressue or not

Does anybody know whether or not the 98-02 cummings need a muffler or not for backpressue. My 01 seems to have lost power when when I took the muffler off and run nothing but straight pipe all the way turbo out.

The better a diesel motor breathes the better it will perform that is all there is to it.

But to answer your Q no a diesel does not need backpressure.

Its all in your head

The less restriction after the turbo the better on a diesel. Mufflers and resonators keep the hot exhuast gasses from gettin away faster and could be prolematic with modifications. You shouldnt notice any difference in power either way, just more noise witch is good .

Welcome to DTR!

No performance loss, but a great sound is what you get with a straight pipe. Just a heads up, some folks around here can get a little excited when you add the "g" to Cummins
