Aux. Fuel Tanks

???How are most in-bed fuel tanks installed. What i mean is; are they plumbed directly into existing tank or is there a elec/manual switch over valve needed in order to transfer fuel. Or is everything done automatically...just add fuel and go? Has anyone installed their own tank? Or did you have a shop do it? How much, etc.. Thanks!

Re:Aux. Fuel Tanks

Buzz,

I install a 60 gallon combination fuel tank and tool box from NorthernTools.com.

I installed an electric fuel shut off switch wired together with a pump, to pump into my factory tank. The switch inside the cab that operates the pump and fuel shut off switch, lights up so I know it's on. I installed a filter before the electric shut off valve and a manual shut off right by the tank to prevent siphoning while changing the filter. I drilled and tapped the top of the factory tank and JB Welded a fitting into it to fill the tank. I then took the breather fitting on the top of the tank and ran a return line back to my auxillary tank.

This tank was very reasonably priced. I am very happy with this setup. I also have a tool box for storage and 60 extra gallons of fuel. I have a canopy on my truck, but the side windows are tool windows for access to the tank and tool box.

I hope this helps.

Re:Aux. Fuel Tanks

Buzz
I've got an Aero in bed verticle 45 gallon aux tank in my '93. I plumbed it mechanically with the valves on the floor between my seat and the drivers door. That way I can reach down and switch tanks while on the move. I decided on mechanical over electric due to past problems with electric switching devices. I've got a canopy on the bed so I plumbed the fill through the side using a fill from a wrecking yard - it happened to be the same color. I'ts been in for about a year and a half and works great.
Bob

Re:Aux. Fuel Tanks

I have the RDS tank/box combo. 41 Gallon tank plus the tool box. Good quality unit. If it is legal in your state and you don't go into Canada, you could get by with gravity flow. Easy to do yourself. RDS has an install kit for switching that is very slick. It uses the truck fuel pump to draw down the tank selected. Switching is electric. The stock fuel gauge is switched with the tank allowing the one gauge to be used for both tanks. Much cheaper than going with some of the other units. You will have less than $900 invested if you install it yourself. See pic attached.

Bob

Re:Aux. Fuel Tanks

My tank is gravity and the fuel runs first through a manual shutoff that in normally open (shut of to service the filters).
Then it runs to a water seperator then a inline fuel filter, fuel solinoid valve and enters the fuel tank at a fitting installed in the regular tank fuel filler tube the tank holds 168 litres 44 US. gal. When the low fuel light comes on I flick a switch and the fuel flows from the auxillery tank to the main tank it takes about 1/2 hour or so to fill the main tank. I tested this and let it get full and I left the switch on and there were not any leaks unless you started to remove the main fuel tank cap.I have only filled this tank twice so far but it seems to work well at this point.
Jim O

Re:Aux. Fuel Tanks

;D ;D I have a 35 gal. tank that i had built to fit right in front of the tool box....it is gravity feed only, with the manual switch at the side bottom of the aux tank.
I have to get out to switch tanks, but that gives me an excuse to stretch the legs for 5 secs. ha ha ha .
It has been working great...I plumbed it with 3/8 hose and it will fill the main in about 20 minutes.

Re:Aux. Fuel Tanks

I have the 74 gallon Transfer Flow tank in the bed. It has a computerized system, with a small electric pump to transfer the fuel from the aux. to the main. It also has a fuel gauge that is mounted in the cab that tells me, in gallons, how much fuel in the aux. tank, the main tank, and the total gallons. The computer keeps the two tanks balanced. If you start with both tanks full, the computer will keep each tank at the same level, respectively. As the main tank drains, the computer will pump fuel into it. When the main tank is half full, the aux tank will also be half full. It's pricey, but I think that it's a great system.
