Alternator whine with new stereo
Just got done installing a complete new stereo and now I have a bad alternator whine. Installed an Alpine deck, Autotech 5 channel amp, all new door speakers and a 10" sub and am so ****** about this whine. Power for the amp is coming from the driver side battery off of the positive terminal. Help me out. Thanks, Eric

Agreed.
Every system I've installed has had the power line running down by the drivers' seat near the rocker, and the signal RCAs either down the hump or down the passenger side. Also, make sure your ground is short, and you bolt it to bare metal.
Twisted pair RCAs will also help reduce the chance of getting interference.
Upgrading the body ground to the battery wire is also a good idea.

I have put stereos in 4 different 2nd Gens, 2 gassers and 2 diesels, and have had to use noise supressors on all of them as well as on my CB. The altenators that Chrysler uses are not of the highest quality.

I also installed an aftermarket system and was irritated that there was a small noise as well. I checked everything as mentioned above and eventually gave up on it as it was really only noticable when the volume was really low. The other day I realized it was my cell phone charger plugged into the cig lighter causing the interference.

if the short grounds do not work you will have to use a filter i build my own using junk parts but you can buy them already made up, use a separate battery to check if it is the power amp or the preamp , if it is the preamp it is easer because it does not pull as many amps and the coil can be smaller if it is the power amp just be careful of the rating of the filter

Where do I get a noise suppressor? My ground for the amp is pretty short, the amp is under the back seat and the ground goes to the rear seat mounting bolt. The RCA's I used should be fairly decent. They are Stinger and I believe they are twisted pair but they do run down the door sill with the power supply for the amp. Thanks for the input. Eric

Check your grounds but also check the antenna. Make sure its tight... If you have an old antenna laying around just plug it in and throw (place) it on the ground. Failing this a line choke (filter) can be installed, these can be bought at Radio Shack or most radio installation shops.

After fine tuning I found that the guy who did the install had the RCA's for the front and rear channels reversed from how he had the speakers wired on the amp. I switched them and now everything is fine. I love when I trade my labor for a stereo install and I have to go back through and make sure it's done right anyway! Another example of if you want it done right, do it yourself. Thanks for all the suggestions, Eric
