Ajusting boost

Need to know how to lower my boost. I am pushing 45 at full throttle. Would like to put it at 30-32. My transmission guy recommends that I lower it. Any suggestions?

I don't know if the wastegate is adjustable on the Banks system, but if it is, you can adjust when the flapper opens/closes, ie., changing boost levels.

If there is a regulator/boost controller mounted between the compressor housing/wastegate actuator, opening all the way up keeps boost at it's lowest levels...

I dunno anything else for the truck itself, maybe these guys do, I'm just speaking from a turbocharger point of view.

Is that a modified Auto? If not,, it soon will be,, LOL.

I am not familiar with the Banks Stuff (It's a bit to much $$ for me), but if you look on the bottom side of th front of your turbo, there should be a gold 90* Elbow on it, and if the banks kit came with an "Adjustable Elbow" there should be something like an allen wrench screw on there you could back out, and let your Wastegate Actuator see more boost, therefore making it open sooner.

If your turbo doesn't have a Adjustable boost Elbow, I have them here,, they are about $30 for an adjustable one, and ~$10 for the one you PROBABLY have. (non-adjustable)

What exactly did your Banks kit come with? Did it come with a Big Head WasteGate Actuator?

At 45PSI, that turbo is writing it's last will, and will soon depart from you.

36PSI is the max. boost that is still considered efficient on the HX-35 turbo, and that's I feel you should shoot for.

Hope this helps,
Merrick

Mcummins,

I have the Power Pac from Banks. My truck came with it. I believe there is an ajustment for boost. I am not sure where. I am fairly new to diesels. And yes I have been through the Auto Transmission Circus. I have had it rebuilt three times in the last year. It just came back from my transmission shop. Lost OD last time. TC again. He put a HD TC on it this time did the newest upgrades and up the pressures. He also gave me a new 12,000, 1 year warranty. I find it hard to believe that the Power Pac is causing my problem. It runs good, but does not seem to have the power to shell a Trans all the time. I have not towed or abused it in any way. Occasionally I step on it to pass a car etc. I do want to turn the boost down, but personally do not believe this is the problem. Probably should have spent the big bucks and really modified this trans. If it shells again it is going away. I love the truck but cannot deal with this every 3 months. My transmission mechanic says he gets about 3 tc's bad out of every 100. I am very skeptical.

It's the banks kit causing it. It adds more power than the stock TC can handle. Anything over an extra 65 hp on a stock auto will burn it up.

Big Blue,

Question...If you have the horsepower but do not use it, how could this be taking out the tranny? You may be right though. Will turning down the boost lower the horsepower? I would like to try detuning it a bit.

Like BigBlue said,,

Your Banks kit is tearing up your trans. Your Direct Clutches slip, contaminate your fluid, and make your TCC slip. I don't care what kind of promises banks give you 50-80HP and your trans will wear fast, and at 100+HP it's toast in no time.

You said he put a HD TC? What converter was this?

What was/is the HP of your Banks kit 90-120?

You do need to turn down the boost,, it's going to blow up your turbo.

Take off your intake hose (From your air filter to your turbo) and you'll see a rubber line coming from your turbo. This is teh line that send the boost signal to the wastegate actuator, and what has probably happened is, when your Banks kit was installed, they replaced the factory boost elbow with one from their kit, and now your WasteGate isn't seeing any boost, so it never opens, and now is overspeeding your turbo.

You need to see if this Boost elbow is an adjustable type, or not. If it has a screw in it, then it is, if it seems to be smooth on all sides then it is not, and you will need to get an adjustable boost elbow.

If you would like,, feel free to give me a call and we could discuss this more.

FloorMan,, I would do a search for "lock open wastegate" or shell trick" to close off your Boost line coming from your boost elbow.

Hope this helps,

Merrick

Not true........I ran a 80hp chip with STOCK TC and towing trailers. I just got a 400hp TC just so i can run a bigger chip when i want.

Floorman, I run the same set up on the same year truck you do. I used the Ace hardware 1.65 turnbuckle to hold the waste gate. My top boost is 30.5.
