Re:Airaid Filters
Smokinshaker: I agree with you.
Actually, on that Poweraid I had on the Jeep -- the helix was worse that useless, and I eventually bored it out of the throat to gain more air volume. There was a low-end torque gain, very small -- we demonstrated that -- but a home-made spacer fabbed from a block of aluminum would have done just as well or better -- for a quarter the price. (Strip racers have been using spacers for years to get an edge at the beginning of a run, and the 2.5L engine in the Jeep TJ's needs all the help it can get.)
I don't recommend the Poweraid, and I'd be very careful about buying into the Airaid's claims. Anyone who uses an "oiled", cotton gauze air filter needs to realize that it won't filter as well as a paper or paper/foam filter. If you're on the road all the time, that may not be a problem, and you'll benefit by the increased air flow. But if you're taking your rig offroad, especially into fine dust -- like I do in Nevada -- that's a big problem. For me, the BHAF seems to be the best compromise for now -- although I'd sure like to know about the possibility of running a Scotty II with a paper filter when I'm out West or up North.
