air filter performance

I have had a K&N filter in for about 10K now. 3 weeks ago i noticed the manometer read 65% plugged,so i removed it ,cleaned it, And with your'e collective thoughts, oiled it. I now have had to reset the monometer three times and it appears to be clean. Any answers would be appreicieted. I am considering going back to OEM. It did'nt plug in 30K, but do notice a difference in turbo sound running it. Thanks TG

Do a search here on K&N filters and you will probably soon part with it Remember the search engine won't let you search only 3 letters so use a # as a wildcard to get past the 3 letter minimum.

I once had the same thing happen and it turned out the rubber conector from the air box to the fender was colapsing in the fender just enough to draw the indicator down. The fix was about a 3 1/2"? of threaded 1/4 X 20 rod with a self locker nut on each end leaving about 1/8th thread sticking out on the ends. drill two 1/4" holes top and bottom at the rubber mouth and use the rod w/ nut stops as a tent poll wedged in the mouth. IMO I would still get rid of the K&N if you intend on keeping your truck for the fat mile odometer club!

Just replace it with BHAF, Scotty II, or AFE. Lots of postings on all.

Seems nobody has any confidence in the K&N. Now I too have lost confidence. I will go back to OEM till BHAF goes in. I may try to check the fender boot first, but the end result will be a AFE.

its a 4.5"hole for the Scotty 2 but you dont HAVE to drill it. You only drill the hole if you want to bring cooler air from the cowl area. The Scotty will still pull air from the fender area just like the stock box but you wont have the sealing problems that you have with the stocker.

In the order of filtering efficiency the results are:
FILTER % Efficiency
AC Delco OE 99.93%
Baldwin 99.72%
No name filter (made for gas engine, 1/3 less pleats) 99.32%
AFE ProGuard 7 (73-10062), panel filter 99.23%
WIX/Napa 99.03%
Purolator 98.73%
Amsoil, new style 98.63%
UNI 97.93%
K&N 96.80%

FLOW RESTRICTION FROM BEST TO WORST:
FILTER RESTRICTION in Inches H2O
K&N 4.54
Mystery bargain filter 4.78
AFE Pro Guard 7 Panel 4.99
Purolator 5.05
WIX/Napa 5.06
UNI 5.40
Baldwin 5.71
Amsoil 5.88
AC Delco 6.23
DIRT HOLDING CAPACITY From best to worst. This is the AMOUNT OF DIRT it took to create an ADDITIONAL 10 inches of water restriction. At that point the test is terminated. This indicates HOW LONG a filter is good before it must be cleaned or replaced.
AC Delco 573.898 grams
WIX/Napa 447.366
Purolator 388.659
Baldwin 388.154
UNI 374.638
Mystery bargain 350.402
AFE Pro Guard 7 232.516
K&N 211.58
Amsoil 196.323
TOTAL DIRT PASSING THE FILTER DURING THE TEST. This is how much dirt your engine will take in if you use the filter for the duration that would cause the filter to become "dirty" enough to need replacement or cleaning. The "Dirt Passing The Filter" is the dirt collected by the "Post Filter" during the test.
FILTER DIRT IN GRAMS PASSED
AC Delco 0.4 g
Baldwin 1.1g
AFE Pro Guard 7 1.8g
Mystery Bargain 2.4g
Amsoil 2.7g
WIX/Napa 4.4g
Purolator 5.0g
K&N 6.0g
UNI 7.9g
Note: The Purolator was reported to have a seal malfunction during the test and passed more dirt than it would have with a good seal.
Interesting. SPICER

Thanks DR. Evil, Mark. Would either of you still recommend the ScottyII without the drilled hole or the AFE version?
