Adding additional fuel filtration

Without getting into a long discussion about fuel additives...does it make sense to add an additional fuel filter to a new truck?

Re:Adding additional fuel filtration

I was wondering the same thing. I don't think it was much of an issue on the jerk pump setup, but I can't help but wonder if the HPCR setup might be more sensitive to contaminants. I was actually thinking of adding an aux tank in the bed and plumbing it to the main tank using an old style carter lift pump to push the fuel through a Racor 2 micron filter into the main tank. If I only filled the truck via the aux tank all of the fuel in the main tank would be "pre-polished" by the filter between the aux and main tanks.

Unless you habitually use bad fuel, or for some reason have to use a sole source of fuel that may be suspect (I'm thinking a possible industrial application), or have a need to shift filters on the fly, I see no reason for an additional filter. I would think that the installed stratapore does a suitable job. If you are really concerned, you could increase the frequency of fuel filter changes.

I agree, just change fuel filters more often if your worried. If you go to Cummins.com and go to the 5.9/Dodge section it says the fuel filtration system is adequete and no more is needed.

Re:Adding additional fuel filtration

Nevada, thats a great idea. It's true, the higher the pressure of the injection system, the more small particulate matter in the fuel will wear it out. In most parts of the country our diesel fuel is so dirty and full of particulates we need all the filters we can get. I have an additional stanadyne 2 micron filter in line with my factory filter on my TDI, and it works out well. Just check the flow rates on the filters and find one that's not too restrictive, and run it in line, or an aux tank setup like you suggested. Filters are cheap. Injectors and pumps are not.

Unless you add a filter with less porous filtering that the factory one, all you will be adding is filter capacity, not filtering quality.

If you add a less porous filter you will cause whatever pump that brings fuel to the engine to work harder.

The best advice has already been given--change filters more often if you're concerned about dirty fuel.
